MIT Smarties Create Interactive Wallets

Raise your hand if you’ve ever avoided looking at your credit card bill (easier now, thanks to automatic payments) or bank balance? We’re oftentimes guilty of not managing our money as best we could, and we hate to use technology as the culprit, but you can’t deny that money is becoming increasingly abstract with online banking. That’s an issue a group of MIT students address with a project that creates mechanical wallets to make you more conscious of spending. One wallet buzzes when you make a transaction, another inflates or deflates to reflect your bank balance, and one (our favorite) includes a hinge that becomes more difficult to open as you get closer to your monthly budget max. Bruise Cruise To The Bahamas With Indie Rock Bands

Forget the Mayercraft, the Bruise Cruise is where it’s at! This February, you can fend off the frigid winter, rock out to rad concerts, make out with random hotties, and sail the high seas, all in one smooth move, on a Carnival cruise. Surfer Blood, Vivian Girls, Thee Oh Sees, The Black Lips, and more are all boarding the indie rock version of the Love Boat for a three-day Bahamian free-for-all. It sounds so good I got crabs just dreaming about it! Keep reading »

The Boob Tube: Must-See TV For The Week Of December 6, 2010

Perhaps the biggest television happening of the week: Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People” special, which will be airing Thursday night. However, her “fascinating” choices put us to sleep, so we’re going to go ahead and skip it. What will we be watching instead? This week’s best offerings are all a little nerdy, from Barack Obama appearing on “Mythbusters” to National Geographic’s Big Cat Week. After the jump, previews and details for our television picks this week.

Katy Perry Is Darren Criss’ “Teenage Dream”

The Trevor Project is a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline specifically designed for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender teens—a service that we’ve seen in the past year is hugely important. Last night, at a benefit to raise money for the project, Darren Criss and the Warblers from “Glee” did their rendition of Katy Perry‘s “Teenage Dream.” And then, in the middle, Katy joined them on stage to help out. It was completely adorable. Even if we’re a little bummed that the Warblers aren’t in their jackets. [NY Post] Keep reading »

The Christmas Tree Of Our Nightmares

When I was little I used to go swimming in a freshwater lake near my parents’ house. Until one day I waded in and saw a dull white eel swimming near the perimeter of the shoreline and was traumatized. I refused to ever go in the lake again. So you can imagine how absolutely thrilled I was to see artist Kazuhiko Minawa’s eel-powered Christmas tree. Says Minawa, “If we could gather up all the electric eels from around the world, we would be able to light up an unimaginably large Christmas tree.” Sure, I’ll get right on that. Sarah Palin Proves She’s A Pistol-Packing Mama

Sarah Palin the hunter is even more disturbing than Sarah Palin the politician. I will have nightmares about the look on her face when that caribou falls. And then the snapshot she takes while holding the dead animal’s head upright? NO! All to impress her daddy. [BuzzFeed] Keep reading »
