Airlines Might Allow In-Flight Phone Calls Soon, And People Are Not Loving That Idea

Airlines Might Allow In-Flight Phone Calls Soon, And People Are Not Loving That Idea

As you’ve probably heard, federal regulators are considering lifting the national ban on in-flight phone calls. Not surprisingly, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll, people are less than thrilled about it.

The prohibition has been in place for 22 years, and the FCC held the first of several meetings on the topic on Thursday. At this point, phone technology is too fancy for calls from 35,000 feet to overload cellphone towers on the ground, so there’s technically no reason the government should not allow those calls to happen. Legal or not, nobody is really loving the idea of sitting next to someone who gabs to their best friend on the phone all the way from NYC to LAX. Keep reading »

The Delusional New York Times Vows Column To End All Delusional New York Times Vows Columns

Yogis, rejoice! O’Hare International Airport in Chicago now has a yoga room! The room is open from 6 am – 10 pm, and according to aviation commissioner Rosemarie Andolino, it serves as an “oasis for passengers.” O’Hare is one of the nation’s busiest airports, so an oasis is exactly what its visitors probably need! Chicago’s other major airport, Midway, is also set to open a yoga room in the near future as well. Keep reading »

I Want To Live There: A Life-Size Gingerbread House

When I first read about the life-size, world record-setting gingerbread house that had been erected in Texas, I was ready to pack my bags and move in. I mean, 39,000 edible cubic feet of gingerbread, frosting, candy canes, and lollipops? Life dream status! But alas, some things that seem like a dream true are actually a nightmare in disguise. In the case of my beloved gingerbread house, the nightmare came in the form of 2,000 bees who have reportedly infested the sugary structure. A beekeeper was brought in to relocate the swarm, but the anxiety caused by the possibility of their return would probably cause me to emotionally eat the entire living room. Because if there’s one thing that’s stronger than my love of gingerbread, it’s my fear of bees. Sigh. I suppose my gingerbread house dream will have to be put on hold, yet again. [Oddity Central]

Cat Heaven Island Is Exactly What It Sounds Like

In Japan, there is an island of fairytale dreams called Tashirojama, better known as Cat Heaven Island. In this magical land, cats outnumber humans. Tashirojama has about 100 human residents, and many of them care for the kitties who make their homes all over the island. It is said on the island that giving the cats a helping hand brings good luck and wealth. The cats hang out in backyards, chill in the streets, and run free on the beach like wild horses do in Nicholas Sparks movies. I want to go to there. But seriously. This place looks like a dream come true. Free cuddles from kittens all day? Sign me up! Photographer Fubirai documents Tashirojama’s adorable feline residents, so head to his website if you’re looking for more! [Huffington PostFubiraiSo Bad So Good]

Cities That Surprise: Rochester, NY

“Cities That Surprise” highlights places across America that defied or exceeded our expectations, for whatever reason. Today, Allison Sass tells us why under all that snow, Rochester, New York is a hidden gem!

After graduating college, I spent two years living and working in Rochester, NY, a city best known for its now-bankrupt Kodak national headquarters, horrible winters, and being one of the three cities in the U.S. that’s actually cloudier than Seattle. Want to visit yet?? Keep reading »

When most people visualize their dream vacation, Caribbean beaches and margaritas on a lounge chair come to mind. For British writer and cyclist Lois Pryce, however, her dream trip equated to something a little different — a solo motorcycle trip across Iran. Pryce spent this September on a three-week tour of the country, her curiosity fueled by the conflicting advice she’d heard about traveling there. “On the one hand I’d hear awful things about women being stoned for adultery, the highest rate of execution in the world, and nuclear enriching,” she told the UK’s Telegraph. “Then overland travelers would say Iran was wonderful and their favorite country, and that difference intrigued me.” Keep reading »
