Culturista: Your Guide To The Week From “Our Idiot Brother” To The MTV VMAs

Let’s face it: keeping up with pop culture is difficult. With more than 1000 channels worth of TV shows, not to mention a new flood of movies and music every week, it’s practically a full-time job to keep up with everything. Luckily, it is my full-time job. So after the jump, your cheat sheet to the TV shows you need to watch, the albums you need to hear, the movies you need to see, and much, much more this week. Shun, Shag, Or Marry: The Supporting Cast Of “Magic Mike”

Magic Mike,” aka the movie where Channing Tatum will play a stripper (a job he has actually held in real life), is shaping up to have the hottest supporting cast ever. And we can only imagine that most of them will be taking off their clothes. Thursday, it was announced that Matthew McConaughey had signed on to play Dallas, a former dancer who runs the Xquisite Club where Magic Mike works. It also was revealed that Matt Bomer of “White Collar” had committed to playing a stripper in Magic Mike’s coterie. And yesterday we learned that Joe Manganiello is in final talks to play the role of Big Dick Richie in the movie. Which, great name?

After the jump, who of these three we would shun, shag, and marry. Keep reading »

Anne Hathaway Is “Living On Kale and Dust” To Fit Into The Cat Suit

“Last time we talked about how much I really don’t like working out, and I’ve kind of fallen. … I really like it now. I feel like, ugh, I’m that person. I came to L.A., got a bikini wax, went blond and loooove working out. The catsuit’s unforgiving, man. I’m a vegetarian and right now, I’m living on kale and dust for the training.”

Anne Hathaway talks to Chelsea Handler about how she’s staying in shape for her role as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nooooo, Anne! Eating next to nothing while you’re exercising tons just isn’t okay. Perhaps she confabbed with Jessica Alba, who recently shared with Lucky that’s she’s losing her baby weight by eating 1200 calories a day. “Basically I’m starving—it sucks,” she said. “I drink a lot of water.” Now, there is a part of me that would rather see actresses being honest about their strict diets rather than being all “I eat cheeseburgers all the time and am just naturally this skinny.” But I really wish these women didn’t feel the pressure to live in nutritional misery to whittle off pounds. And it really worries me that giving flippant quotes like these normalizes extreme dieting. [NY Daily News, ONTD]

Jennifer Lawrence Records Song For “The Hunger Games”

Surprise! Jennifer Lawrence is not only stunning and an amazing actress who got an Oscar nomination right out of the gate; the girl apparently has pipes, too. Like Robert Pattinston did for the “Twilight” soundtrack, Jennifer has recorded a song for her movie, “The Hunger Games.” The song is called “Rue’s Lullaby” and she worked with Danny Elfman and producer T-Bone Burnett, the guy behind “Crazy Heart,” on it. And T-Bone says she rocked. “It was beautiful,” he said. “She did great. She’s singing great.” Might we see a musical in her future? Or perhaps she and Rob can start a superband? Maggie Gyllenhaal Discovers A Vibrator In “Hysteria”

The time before the invention of the vibrator is a dark period of world history which I prefer not to think about. But imagine, ladies, if you will, a period when all of a woman’s problems were attributed to “hysteria,” a vague pathological affliction which doctors found could best be cured by applying pressure to a woman’s most delicate regions. A suffering woman could be relieved of her hysteria by hand, of course, but the world needed a device to get the job done more quickly. “Hysteria” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next month and stars Hugh Dancy as a young doctor in Victorian England and Maggie Gyllenhaal as his boss’s daughter, who knows at the root of all these hysterics is a need for pleasure. God bless electricity, that’s all I have to say. [YouTube] Keep reading »

10 Movies We’d Like To See In Smell-O-Vision

Don’t be confused. “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World,” starring Jessica Alba and Joel McHale, is not a 3D movie—it’s actually 4D. Director Robert Rodriguez is bringing it to you in “Aroma-Scope.” In other words, movie-goers will get scratch n’ sniff cards that have them smelling scents that correspond with specific scenes in the flick. “Just watching my own kids with interactive gaming, you ask them to watch a movie, it just feels so passive to them. I thought, this helps bridge the gap,” said Rodriguez, who explained that one of the scents is reminiscent of a dirty diaper. “Originally, we didn’t have any really rancid smells, but kids wanted something really stinky in there. It really doesn’t smell that bad. No one’s going to get sick in the theater.” Phew. [Huffington Post]

Aroma-Scope is supposed to take the experience to the next level, but … I have no interest in seeing “Spy Kids.” So here, some movies I’d actually like to see using this technology. Keep reading »
