One of the many reasons why I’m psyched to see “Snow White and the Huntsman” is that it actually seems to be as dark as the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale was written. While the story has been Disney-fied in a couple incarnations, “Snow White and the Huntsman” is a seriously grim and disturbing story — exactly the way it should be! In preparation for the movie’s release on June 1, we’re going to be giving you a little insight into the backstory behind some of the key characters in our “Not Your Children’s Fairy Tale” video series. We’ve already told you about how evil Queen Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron) is out to eat Snow White’s heart so she can attain immortality, but why is our heroine such a threat to her anyway? Here’s some background on Snow White herself. Keep reading »

The Katniss Everdeen Barbie

We admit it! We greeted the announcement of a “Hunger Games” Barbie with a little skepticism. Okay, a lot of skepticism. The secondary marketing for the movie (which took first place at the box office for the third weekend in a row this weekend, beating “Titanic‘s 3D” rerelease and yet another “American Pie” movie, grossing more than $450 million globally so far) has ridden a surprisingly satirical line by speaking to its audience as if they were citizens of the hedonistic, voyeuristic Capitol; casting those who would excitedly anticipate The Hunger Games as those who would excitedly anticipate the Hunger Games.

A Katniss Barbie, however, seemed outside of that particular merchandizing plan. We feared the transformation of Katniss Everdeen into a Barbie doll in much the same way that Katniss is transformed into a dressed up Capitol plaything, but it appears what we’ve actually gotten looks more like an action figure than anything else. Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” Looks Kind Of Amazing

Watch Video

The restricted trailer for “Ted,” Seth MacFarlane’s feature film directing debut, was released recently and damn, does it look ridiculous. Mark Wahlberg plays John, a man who lives with his childhood teddy bear brought to life, Ted (voiced by MacFarlane). When John falls in love with Lori (Mila Kunis), he’s forced to grow up. That otherwise basic, wacky premise is, of course, told through MacFarlane’s brand of raunchy, offensive humor — Ted smokes from a bong, John rattles off dozens of “white trash names” like lightening, etc. Personally, I can’t wait.

What Are We Thinking About Woody Allen’s New Rom-Com, “To Rome With Love”?

In my opinion, Woody Allen films are hit or miss. I either love them or hate them. I was personally a big fan of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Midnight In Paris.” “To Rome With Love” looks like it may be another quirky winner with an all-star cast. It follows several characters on their romantic escapades through Rome. But then again … this may be just another stop on Woody’s European film tour. I guess we shall see on June 22. Thoughts?

5 Reasons To See “Titanic 3D”

I saw ”Titanic” 10 times in 1997 when it came out in the theaters. Granted, I was 19 and living in Florence, Italy and I had a lot of time on my hands (clearly, since I spent more than 31 hours staring at it over a 12-week period), but it was a good movie.

Sure, now it seems cheesy and silly in parts — “I’m the king of the world!” — but I was still first in line on the opening day of “Titanic 3D.” It did not disappoint. Even though I am older and wiser now, I have been in love (I hadn’t then), and I generally think dying for someone you have known three days is kind of dumb (why couldn’t they BOTH get on that damn door?), it’s still a romantic weep-fest. Sigh.
