Happy International Women’s Day! (Congrats on having a vagina. And on being generally awesome. And so much more.)
If this all crept up on you, and you’re stuck behind your desk all day, here’s a quick and easy way to lend your support to the female community—sign your name on the Yves Saint Laurent and UNIFEM (the women’s fund at the United Nations) anti-violence campaign. Showing your support for the “Say No to Violence” action will join you with the UNIFEM-YSL alliance, which promises to “highlight the issue and call attention to working strategies and solutions that apply in developing countries and are applicable in the developed world as well.” In addition, the initiative will provide resources and grants in a variety of areas.
A tip of the hat to YSL for using its fashion power for good and supporting the global women’s community. [SayNoToViolence.org] Keep reading »
Yes, that’s a shot of the late Yves Saint Laurent‘s former “country home.” But really, would you expect anything less from one of the most luxe fashion designers of all time? The mansion in Deauville, France, is dripping with extravagance, and now you can get a look inside and even own a piece of it — Christie’s is auctioning off the wares inside. Granted, you have to be pretty wealthy to take part (sigh, as always).
But the eclectic collection of furniture and decorative accents makes for entertaining viewing pleasure. Feast your eyes on an elk chandelier, Grecian urns, and tons of Rococo furniture. Our favorite item, however, has to be a collection of porcelain bulldogs. So random! (Yet weirdly chic as well.) Some more pics after the jump! [Paris By Appointment Only] Keep reading »
When it comes to highbrow fashion, even we get a bit lost when it comes to reading the obtuse critiques of fashion journalists or hearing the vague, but supposedly deep, inspirations from designers. Today, the Guardian proudly calls out the incoherent information fashion designers spit out to “explain” their collections. And quite rightly, seeing as what the Alexander Wangs and Karl Lagerfelds of the world have to say doesn’t quite match up with what you see on the runway. So we decided to take a closer look at what a handful of top designers had to say about their collections, and we’ve helpfully translated. [Guardian.co.uk] Keep reading »
Yves Saint Laurent just released its Spring 2010 men’s video and the star is not so much an Adonis-like fellow complete with lovely face and six pack abs as it is, well, an 11 year old boy. But after you get over the initial shock and displeasure about the fact that you were turned on in advance and the grade schooler’s appearance made you feel kind of dirty, you’ll start to like the quirky little video. The kid is son of the director, Samuel Benchetrit, and the good ‘ol fashioned hijinks he gets up to at The Bristol Hotel after finding a key on the street are worth a brief at-work giggle. From writing on mirrors with ketchup to watching a bit of hotel TV porn and convincing Melinde, apparently the lover of the rightful renter of the hotel room, to fly to Paris, the little one gets stuff done. [The Cut]
Check out some more fashion videos after the jump, but keep in mind that they aren’t all this endearing… Keep reading »
Raphael Young’s uncle, Alexandre Narcy, spent the entirety of his working life designing shoes for Yves Saint Laurent. To this day, Narcy’s influences can be seen in many of the classic YSL shapes. His nephew, however, didn’t quite get the shoe design gene, as you can see from the monstrosity of an ankle boot above. We’re all for going without heels every now and again, but these are just trying too hard to be clever, don’t you think?
Pointed, quilted, metallic and weird as hell, Young’s heelless creations are a classic case of Too Much Going On and could definitely do with some paring down. Or maybe they’re just beyond saving…what do you think? [Fashionologie]

Fashion designer Tom Ford knows this season’s hottest accessory is the baby bump and he wants to make one for his 2008 Collection. The dapper American legend raised Gucci, YSL, and his own house, but now he wants a kid….and what a stylish looker his baby will be! Although Ford’s been with his partner, Richard Buckley, former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Hommes International, foreva-eva, Ford admits he slept with women until he finally realized he was too hot to not be a homo. So now, for the first time in about thirty years, one lucky lady will get to be his sperm receptacle/baby mama! And the fringe benefits sound even better. After all, one womb for a free wardrobe is better than the going surrogacy rate for sure. [Style Dash] Keep reading »
