Elwood, the eight-year-old Chihuahua/Chinese crested mix who won the title of World’s Ugliest Dog in 2007, passed away this weekend. According to his owner, Karen Quigley, the perpetually unimpressed-looking pooch died unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day. Though he has been experiencing some health problems, he was seemingly doing well. Elwood was lucky to have Quigley as his owner; she adopted him at nine-months-old, saving him from being euthanized because the breeder though he was “too ugly” to sell. Sob! After winning the coveted title of World’s Ugliest Dog, Elwood went on to become the focus of a children’s book teaching acceptance and appeared at over 200 events raising money for animal rescue groups and nonprofit organizations. ”He made people smile, he made them laugh and feel good. So okay, he’s got a little bit of a humpback and his head might be a bit too big for his body, but is it really fair to crown Walle, the beagle/boxer/basset mix from Chico, California, as the world’s ugliest dog. One judge apparently said that Walle “looked like he’d been Photoshopped from other dogs.” But how does Walle stack up against other past contestants:

This morning, we met Mugly the Chinese Crested, the pooch who won the World’s Ugliest Dog contest for the second time in his ugly life. And somehow, some way, Kathie Lee Gifford managed to make a conversation about Mugly into a conversation about Kathie Lee, specifically how one day she expects “things” to grow out of her face. Yum.
Miss Ellie, a blind 15-year-old Chinese Crested Hairless, won the pedigree class at this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, CA. She certainly deserved that recognition, but she proves love is blind, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and any other adage that’s appropriate here. Would you adopt an ugly pet?
