It’s time for another episode of “Trainer Trials,” our new video series in which I try out various fitness activities in hopes of finding one or more that I don’t hate. (That sounds negative. I’m just really good at finding excuses not to work out, so in order to keep the ol’ ticker healthy, I need a semi-regular fitness routine that is at least half as enjoyable and fun as, say, drinking wine and organizing my sea shell collection.) The amazing Zuta Gilchriest from Crunch Gym came by The Frisky video studio to give me and Jessica some private Zumba tutelage, and, well, booties were poppin’. (Watch above!) Zumba combines dance styles like salsa, merengue and soca, with standard workout moves like lunges and squats, all to the tune of various Latin and world beats. I know, I know, we’re making it look easy – but it’s not. Embodying the spirit of Sasha Fierce works up a sweat, you guys. I don’t know that I feel confident enough yet in my skills, but perhaps after a few more classes, I’ll be bustin’ out that towel move at the clurb. Look out!
Ready to sweat? For the first episode of Trainer Trials (sponsored by Champion The Show-Off Sports Bra), in which I attempt to discover what there is to love about physical fitness, I dragged Ami along to Flywheel Sports for a little indoor cycling (spinning, if you’re nasty). What I learned: My legs are much stronger than I realized, I should probably wear my bangs back next time, and WOW, I look like I’m giving birth when I’m working out! Also, this was fun! Weird. Working out has never really been my thing. I’ve belonged to a few gyms (some of which I never frequented, not even once), I’ve taking a spinning class here and there, I went on a brief — very brief — Bikram yoga kick and then blamed quitting on “the smell.” Nothing has ever stuck. Sometimes I throw on workout clothes with the intention of doing something physical, but end up walking to go pick up a burrito instead. I don’t want it to be this way. I want to be one of those people who actually gets excited about taking a new class at the gym! I want muscles! I want to be able to walk up four flights of stairs without losing my breath! So, I’m challenging myself. Over the next few weeks, three different trainers will be coaching me through different fitness options — FlyWheel Sports, Zumba, and boxing — for a three-part video series sponsored by Champion The Show-Off Sports Bra. It might seem a little more logical for women to slip off their heels to do some dancing, but the Wall Street Journal says a new fitness trend requires precisely the opposite. Called things like “heel hop” or “stiletto fitness,” the classes are offered in a handful of spots from LA to Vegas to Kansas City, but proponents expect them to be spreading quickly. The idea is to strengthen lower leg muscles—the ones needed to wear high heels without stumbling around. Read more…

Going to the gym or taking any sort of yoga class is a great way to stay in shape and keep healthy. This is a fact. You can’t argue this, because science has no room for arguments; science is that badass. While there are those who love to workout and actually thrive on it, there are those who consider it to be the downfall of society so they just don’t do it. These are those who buck the system and will not give into anyone else’s idea of how one should act when it comes to maintaining a healthy brain and body.
Then there’s the crowd who play the “I’m going to the gym” game, even though they’re really not.
At the end of the work day there’s this big production as this particular breed loudly announces they’re going to workout. They’ll even go so far as to have a gym bag packed, but by the time they’re out the door they’re either gunning it home to lounge on the couch or meeting friends for cocktails. Sometimes it’s actually more fun to say you’re going to the gym than to actually go. Why? Because white lies and dramatic displays of untruths are usually a good time. Hence the reason we do them.
