President Obama was in Poland recently for, like, work or something, and decided to squeeze in a little fitness time at the hotel gym — and some sneaky bastard filmed him the whole time. There are some people who seem to be physically incapable of sitting still, whose idea of a great Saturday morning is waking up early, running 10 miles, and pumping some iron. There are other people who seem to be physically incapable of leaving the couch, whose idea of a great Saturday is sleeping in til noon and ordering brunch delivery. The first time I put a barbell across my back, I was in love.
It wasn’t like I had never lifted weights before; I had, but never like this. Thanks to the myth that I needed to do high reps with light weights to get “toned” arms and legs (because, of course, as a woman, I wouldn’t want to get too “bulky”), I had dutifully curled my tiny hand weights a million times. Three things to know about me: 1) I really do not enjoy working out, 2) I’m not really inclined to leave my apartment if I don’t have to and 3) I have ADHD. Therefore, it takes an enormous amount of will power to get myself to leave my apartment in order to go to the gym or a spinning class, and when I do manage to go, it’s hard for my brain to get in that “workout zone” I’ve heard other people crow about because my mind is going crazy unless I’m multitasking. Back when I did go to the gym, however, I found that watching TV while I was on the elliptical (my favorite gym machine by far) was the one thing I could stand to do for any real length of time. “When I’m rich, I’m going to put an elliptical machine in my home theater room so I can work out while I watch TV and then I’ll be caught up on all my shows and have great legs,” I have been known to say. Well, now I don’t have to wait until I’m incredibly wealthy and have a huge estate because I just stumbled upon a $130 home elliptical machine that’s small enough to store in a closet or under the bed. I’m not promising I would love using Joyous’s At-Home Elliptical Trainer every day while I watch my stories, but I do think I could totally tolerate it. I certainly wouldn’t be able to justify NOT using it. That’s really the best possible selling point for me when it comes to workout technology. Last week, while contemplating the tattered, limp tangle of spandex and bent underwires that composed my current sports bra collection, I knew it was time to bite the bullet and go shopping for a new one. I have DD boobs, recently started jogging again, and these worn out bras just weren’t cutting it anymore.
For the past few years, I’d been pretty happy with my Moving Comfort Maia bra, which has an underwire and is very supportive.
