Quiz: What’s Your Fitness Style?

Do your friends marvel at your discipline to be at the gym EVERY morning at 6 a.m.? Or is your favorite exercise move texting? (C’mon it has to burn some calories, right?) Maybe you’ve become addicted to fitness gizmos ever since you tried out your mom’s Thighmaster in the 8th grade … or you’re nursing the tennis elbow you got from playing Wii Fit (who woulda thunk it?). What’s your fitness style? After the jump, take our quiz and find out if you’re a Workout Warrior, Gym Rat … or just Loving Your Lady Lumps. Keep reading »

Naked Man Is Supposed To Inspire Men To Work Out

I thought ads were supposed to make you want to spend money, not projectile vomit. Copyranter, who likes to frighten us, points us to this gross and gory ad for Magali’s Workout System (er, Magali’s Workout System?). The catchphrase is “REBORN,” and, I guess, the idea is that if you are a dude, and you use Magali’s Workout System, which sounds like an exercise plan for genies, you will be reborn. Yet, the way they have decided to visually represent just how reborn you will feel post-workout is with an image of a naked, bloody, wet, screaming man lying on the floor like he just popped out of someone’s hoo-ha. His umbilical cord is still attached. Gross. There’s another one featuring a woman that’s so icky I’m not even going to link to it. So, there. In any case, if you’d like to see what a grown man looks like right after he leaves the birth canal, click on through. Potentially NSFW, unless you work at a gynecologist’s office. Keep reading »

Puma’s “The Games We Play” Commercials Want You To Work It, Work It

Looking for a way to get motivated to exercise? This quirky commercial from Puma, part of their “The Games We Play” campaign, may just do it. In Michel Gondry-meets-Wes Anderson-style, a series of urban-dwelling women and men get their work-out on while showing fitness can be funky, as long as you do it to The Shag’s “Stop & Listen.” The spot is part of a series that includes golf, motorsports, and running variations. Hip and cute. We buy it. ['boards] Keep reading »

Should Anorexic Men Or Women Be Allowed In The Gym?

The Daily Mail reported on one woman’s harsh words for her former gym and asks: Why the hell did they let her join and work out when she was so clearly and severely anorexic? (As in skin-and-bones bad.) To the gym’s credit, it soon asked Jessica Bennington, 19, to produce a doctor’s note clearly stating she was healthy enough to work out. Turns out, just days later, she was admitted to the hospital for malnourishment and a host of other complications. Gotta say…

Us Weekly Helps You Drop Weight Like A Star!

Hey look! It’s my least favorite issue of Us Weekly — “2009 Diets That Work!”! That is, CELEB diets that work — all of the diets, workout plans, and “weight loss tricks” are ones that have worked for big money stars like Jennifer Aniston (such a fatty before, RIGHT?), Britney Spears, and Beyonce. And by the way, only women are featured in the “28 page bonus” section (ZOMG, I am tots getting my $3.99 worth). Sure, the vast majority of Us‘s readers are female, and presenting the perfectly perfect bodies of celebs is supposed to be aspirational, but c’mon. Gimme a few male chubsters who lost some weight and how they did it — like Horatio Sanz and Seth Rogan. I want to know how those guys — who were truly overweight — lost the lard. Keep reading »

Lizards Mark Territory By Pumping Up

The gym I belong to (notice I didn’t say “work out at”) isn’t the kind of place where beefcake-like men make primal-sounding noises as they hoist barbells above their heads. If it were that kind of place, I wouldn’t even be a member, because grunting guys would be in control. Need a five-pound weight? Too bad, a red-faced guy is standing in the way and might attack. With lizards, it’s the same. According to a new study, some lizards do morning and evening push-up routines as a show of their strength and to mark their territory. “As in humans, if an anole can do many of these push-ups, it shows that he is in prime physical condition,” said researcher Terry J. Ord. “These displays of strength help avert actual physical confrontations between male lizards, which can be very fierce and destructive.” So, by faking toughness, lizards (and guys) get in fewer fights. If you’re a total wimp but don’t want people beating up on you, start grunting at the gym. [LiveScience]

Frisky Quote Of The Day: Victoria Beckham

“Obviously, working out is important. Well, I don’t. I have joined a gym, but I can’t bring myself to start. What do you wear on the running machine? I can’t bring myself to wear flat shoes.” — Victoria Beckham Keep reading »
