My friend Molly has a wardrobe many young professionals would envy. She works at Banana Republic, and consequently has a closet full of stylish, classy pieces purchased at a heavy discount. Whenever we hang out she looks polished and put together. What Was Your Worst Work Uniform?

When I found out my friend Aileen once worked 8-hour days dressed as a Holiday Snoopy at the local outlet mall, I have to admit a part of me was a bit jealous. I’ve had some interesting jobs in my life — the night in D.C. when I was hired to keep drunk men away from Whoopi Goldberg comes to mind — but I’ve managed to avoid epically bad work uniforms. My professional past includes no propeller hats or suits shaped like a meatball sandwich. In fact, the strictest dress code I’ve had to adhere to was the green apron and black polo shirt required at Starbucks, accessorized with a hearty splatter of mocha all over my face and hair.

Dear Michael Kors,

When I go shopping, I tend to channel a raccoon—I’m instantly attracted to anything shiny, sparkly, or fishy.

This means that I have a closet full of sequined miniskirts and silver boleros and earrings shaped like salmon fillets. I’ll go to the store with every intention of purchasing simple black trousers, but within seconds I’ve been seduced by the flashy racks of ridiculous trend pieces and I end up buying gold lamé harem pants instead. If you work in a place where not looking skanky or slobbish is valued, summer presents a few problems. As temperatures creep closer and closer to unbearable, keeping up the same level of dress sometimes becomes an issue. Fall, after all, makes a crisp blouse and jacket easy. July at 90 degrees? Not so much. Conveniently, unless you work in a really conservative office, there are a few ways to avoid pit stains, look professional, and keep relatively cool, all while showing off your guns. Horror Stories: Outfits That Flopped At the Office

Apparently there’s no dress code at the offices of Gilt Groupe, the online sample sale Mecca that we are obsessed with, because the founders “adore the personal style of every employee.” From the “blokes” at the warehouse in their Kidrobot tees to the world’s most stylish IT department, members of which teeter around in Louboutin and D&G, from the sound of it, it’s like fashion nirvana over there. But while site founders Alexandra Wilkis Wilson and Alexis Maybank may be down with all manners of sartorial experimentation, I can think of quite a few times when previous bosses were a tad aghast at my work wardrobe. Like that time I wore five-inch heels to oversee envelope stuffing at a politician’s campaign office. I was totally fine, but all of my coworkers thought it was hilarious for some reason. Lucky for me, I’ve since left political fundraising in favor of a more fashionable line of work and my office outfit mishaps are at a minimum these days. Too bad I can’t say the same for everyone else!
