American Apparel Goes On The Defensive In Woody Allen Suit

Last year, Woody Allen filed a $10 million lawsuit against American Apparel for using a photo of him dressed as a Hasidic Jew from his rom-com “Annie Hall” without his permission. The image was put on billboards in Hollywood and New York, but according to the company, they were only up for one week. Allen says the ad falsely implied that he endorsed or sponsored American Apparel. The clothier apologized for using Allen’s image and offending his sensibilities. (American Apparel is known for featuring scantily clad female employees in its ads). Keep reading »

Marriage: Who Should Really Be Banned

Last night, I went to bed proud to be an American! But this afternoon, other issues on the ballot, like Proposition 8, made me extra blue, and not in the cool way. Sadly, some of our fellow Americans in California, Arizona, and Florida think they have the right to discriminate against homosexual love and ban an entire community from marrying. WTF? Did you people not see how adorable the Portia and Ellen wedding pics were?! Well, looking at heterosexual divorce rates, perhaps marriage itself is the lost cause. So, if America can’t support a partnership based on love, whose relationships should we really be concerned about? [San Francisco Chronicle]

We See Chick Flicks: Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Starring Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem
Written and Directed by Woody Allen

Woody Allen is a hit or miss type of genius – critics loved Annie Hall and Match Point, but hated Cassandra’s Dream and Melinda and Melinda. His movies either blow your mind or make you feel like you’ve blown 12 bucks at the theater. That being said, I’m a total Woody Allen neophyte, which is strange considering I’m a neurotic native New Yorker. To be honest, at first, there was nothing drawing me to Vicky Cristina Barcelona – I’m not particularly into the actors, didn’t think there was an exciting storyline, etcetera. But the hype got the better of me, so I decided to pop my Woody Allen cherry after all. Keep reading »

Oh Woody Allen, you perv. The director’s newest project, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, stars his current muse, Scarlett Johansson, alongside Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. By the looks of the new trailer, the film features much, much hotness, including a kiss between Johansson and Cruz. Let’s hope this movie is actually good. Keep reading »

Woody Allen Beats Off American Apparel

American Apparel is known for perverse ads which feature their scantily dressed female employees. Although, CEO Dov Charney has already been sued by some of his former employees, he believes in equal opportunity, or so he said in a deposition tape, “I frequently drop my pants to show people my new product.” Vomit. But now someone with a little more to his name is suing American Apparel. Woody Allen, who was featured in a few ads in 2007, including a billboard in New York City, is suing the company for using his image. If you’re afraid to see Woody bent over wearing nothing but a neon g-string and some tube socks, fear not, the ad is actually just of his face — a shot of him dressed up like a Hasidic Jew from his classic romantic comedy Annie Hall. According to our friend Nachshon, who translated, the ad’s slogan reads in Yiddish, “The Holy Rebbie,” which essentially means Woody Allen is Dov Charney’s perv hero. Allen isn’t honored, and just slapped American Apparel with a $10 million dollar lawsuit. While Charney might get away with the ads by calling them “parodies”, it’s comical that someone found a way to make Woody Allen feel violated. [Ad Week]
