Elizabeth Banks On Planned Parenthood
Watch The Video!
  • Actress Elizabeth Banks continues to be a magical unicorn from my dreams with this just-released video in support of Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign. Banks talks about why she supports Planned Parenthood — when she was a broke college graduate they helped regulate her heavy flow! — and Obama’s overall support for women’s health care. (No one tell her “30 Rock” character Avery Jessup that she did this, okay?) [YouTube]
  • Two different people have told me they just couldn’t read this Esquire article about women “whining” because it is just too obnoxious. You’ve been warned. [Esquire]
  • An Orthodox Jewish member of the Boro Park neighborhood in Brooklyn does not want security video cameras posted for a bone-chilling reason: he is concerned that any domestic violence captured on camera will be dealt with “outside the community.”  [Forward]

A Brief History Of The Pregnancy Test

I was commenting on how packaged pregnancy tests resemble fruit roll ups when my mother told me scientists once injected bunnies with a woman’s urine to determine whether or not she was pregnant.

“A rabbit?” I was a little stunned by the idea of poor, floppy-eared, innocent rabbits getting shot up with pee. “Oh yeah!” My mother said nodding.  “People used to say, well, the rabbit died. And everyone would know she was pregnant.”

An episode of “M*A*S*H” even made reference to the practice when Hot Lips thought she might be pregnant and the only available test was via Radar’s unsuspecting pet rabbit Fluffy.

This method seemed so bizarre to me, that I was compelled to learn more about the history of pregnancy tests. Click on to see what kind of crazy stuff I discovered.

To Fight Bone Loss, Drink Wine!

Move over, milk, there’s a more fun drink that helps keep women’s bones healthy as they get older: wine. Drinking the equivalent of two small glasses of wine each day helps post-menopausal women retain old bone, making their bones stronger overall and helping to fend off osteoporosis, according to a new study. Court Block’s Arizona’s Ban On Abortions After 20 Weeks

It’s not like Congress has anything pressing to do, like encourage job growth! Ryan Lochte Thinks Women Look Hottest In …WHAT!?

Ladies love Ryan Lochte. And Ryan Lochte loves what on a woman? The (possibly?) most-watched Olympian recently sat down with Women’s Health for a quick interview, where he revealed what he thinks — and probably only he thinks — is the sexiest thing on a woman.

Seriously, it’s really weird, dude.

When posed with the open-ended question: “Women look hottest in _____”, Lochte answered with … Read more …

Doctors Must Inform Women Of Nonexistent Abortion-Suicide Link, Court Rules

Today's Lady News photo
  • Doctors in South Dakota must inform women of a nonexistent link between having an abortion and a risk of suicide, a federal appeals court has ruled. The ruling pertains to a 2005 law that will require doctors to tell a woman before her abortion that “the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being,” and inform her of the “statistically significant risk factors” such as the “increased risk of suicide ideation and suicide.” Except that risk doesn’t exist. I believe that is called a “lie.” [Wall Street JournalRaw Story]

A federal judge has blocked parts of a law that would effectively force Missisippi’s one remaining abortion clinic to shut down. However, the judge allowed certain restrictions of the MS legislature’s new abortion-restricitng law to remain. MS had passed a law, which went into effect July 1, that required doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at a local hospital.  OB/GYNs at the Jackson Women’s Health Organization have applied for such privileges, but have not yet been granted them. Last week, a federal judge said the doctors need to acquire their admitting privileges but while they do so, they will not be subject to punishment for breaking the law. Keep reading »

“Queen Of Clown Porn,” Hollie Stevens, Dies Of Breast Cancer At Age 30

Hollie Stevens clown porn photo

I thought a post about the passing of an adult film actress who was known as the “Queen Of Clown Porn” could be interesting. But the illness and death of Hollie Stevens, age 30, of breast cancer is nothing short of absolutely tragic. Friends say that Stevens had no health insurance and couldn’t access decent health care; a lump on her breast claimed her life barely out of her 20s. Keep reading »
