North Dakota Governor Signs “Fetal Heartbeat” Abortion Bill

Today's Lady News photo
  • Abortions are banned in North Dakota as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks, after Governor Jack Dalrymple signed the nation’s most restrictive abortion ban into law. This bill is one of several restrictive abortion bills that ND has passed through its legislature recently. [Bismark Tribune, The Week]
  • A male student at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill who is accused of raping fellow student Landen Gambill claims that she has created a “intimidating” environment on campus for him. He was cleared of a sexual assault charge by a campus board, but was found guilty by that same board of harassing Gambill. Still, he faces no criminal charges. Gambill is one of five students who asked the federal government to look into UNC’s handling of sexual violence cases at the school. [WRAL]

The always-inquisitive Jada Pinkett-Smith recently posed a question that has many people scratching their heads and some folks outright upset. In short, she’s wondering if black women ask to be represented in mainstream media, on the covers of magazines like Vanity Fair, shouldn’t white women be represented on the covers of traditionally black magazines like Essence, Ebony and JET?

The answer? Yes and no. Keep reading »

  • Amina, a 19-year-old FEMEN feminist activist in Tunisia, posted a topless picture of herself on Facebook with the words “Fuck your morals” written across her chest. She’s since been threatened with death by stoning or lashes by Muslim leaders. (One warned she might “give ideas to other women.” Oh no! Ideas!) Now activists are calling for a day of support for Amina on April 4. [Huffington Post UK, International Business Times]

Happy 79th birthday, Gloria Steinem! Journalist, feminist icon, and one of the founding members of Ms. magazine, Steinem is the woman I wanted to be when I was 17 … and, who am I kidding, who I still want to be today.

If you’re not familiar with Gloria Steinem’s place in Second Wave feminism — that is, the movement in the 1960s and 1970s that fought sexism in the workforce, legalized abortion, invented the birth control pill, criminalized domestic violence, and a whole host of other gains we take for granted today — then you’d best read up. Because if you’re not down with Gloria, we can’t be friends.

Steubenville Rape Witness Video Released

ABC News aired new video of teen partygoers in Steubenville, Ohio, being questioned by police regarding the sexual assault of “Jane Doe,” the then 15-year-old girl whose story has entranced the nation. On the night of her assault, Jane Doe was raped and carried unconscious to multiple parties all while pictures were taken; last week, Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays received one year and two years, respectively, in juvenile detention facilities for participating in her abuse. ABC’s video shows teens (their faces not obscured, for some reason) describing how Jane Doe got increasingly drunk throughout the evening — meaning she was less and less able to consent to any sexual behavior. “She was a mess,” says one boy interviewed by cops. “She wasn’t responding. She was passed out.” Keep reading »

There’s a new Twitter hashtag #IAskedPolitely chronicling all the times that women have spoken up about sexual harassment/sexual situations in the workplace and not a single thing changed. It’s come about following “Donglegate,” the incident I wrote about earlier this week in which former SendGrid developer evangelist Adria Richards tweeted a picture of a guy who was cracking sexualized jokes at a recent tech conference. The incident has spurred a huge debate about sexism in tech, privacy, and professionalism — both sides convinced the other is just being butthurt. I won’t wade too deeply into the critiques, although I linked to some in Today’s Lady News on Friday. But I did want to point out the #IAskedPolitely hashtag, which is turning into a list of all the awful things that have been said to women who’ve spoken up about sexism in the workplace. You have no sense of humor! It must be your period! You’re overreacting! Of course that’s the reason. No, no, no, it couldn’t be that sexist culture is f**ked up. [Twitter.com #IAskedPolitely]

  • North Dakota passed the nation’s most restrictive ban on abortion today: the ND House of Representatives advanced a “fetal personhood” measure which declares a fertilized egg a human, thereby criminalizing all abortion. The bill now heads to the Republican governor’s desk.  [Huffington Post]

Chloe Angyal

Living one’s values are difficult for any human. Living one’s values when those values are idealistic, compassionate, and come from a deep and open heart can be extremely difficult. Life throws “life” at you and you seek to respond in the way that would make you feel proud of yourself.

That doesn’t always work.

This morning, an editor from Feministing.com Chloe Angyal published an essay confessing that she’s been starving herself. You can read the whole essay here. The tl;dr is that Chloe (I’m calling her Chloe because I’ve known her socially for years and it feels weird to refer to her in the formal “Angyal”) became interested in eating disorders awareness after she became artistic director of her all-girls dance company in college. She made a mandate within the company to stop with negative body-talk and then became involved in a campus eating disorders awareness and prevention group. (Through that group, she met the lovely Courtney E. Martin, who brought her to Feministing.) She’s been reading, blogging and editing Feministing for several years.

And for the past two years, she’s also been starving herself. Keep reading »

job posting 3.20.2013

Sexism in the workplace is manifested in a slew of ways: pay inequality, dress code regulations, getting hit on by your boss. In this case, on the site Australia InfoMine, sexism reared its ugly head before the job even started! According to News.Com.Au, the first requirement on a posting for the Korean coal company Pt. Karya Bumi Baratama is that receptionist applicants  be “female, single, max 25 years old.”

While the post does ask for appropropriate qualities such as an education “from reputable university” and “good interpersonal and communication skill,” it rounds itself out with the last bullet point asking for the candidate to be “good looking.”  Keep reading »
