Today's Lady News photo

bishop trotter bathtub photo

A mini-explosion occurred on the Internet this week when Bishop Larry Trotter, pastor of a Chicago mega-church, posted a picture of himself in the bathtub with his four-year-old granddaughter. Trotter sat in the tub smiling beside the little girl, whose face has been blurred out; both are covered in bubbles, so it’s impossible to tell whether he or she is naked (or wearing swimwear, or otherwise clothed).

Quite understandably, people got very concerned. Keep reading »

Over the weekend, the UK’s Observer published an editorial about transgender people that crossed a bunch of lines. It’s not really worth repeating the things that the author wrote, but they included the sort of slurs that, if used against, say, black people or women, would make your eyes pop out. The Observer has since removed it, but it was full of “N-word” level stuff, with an editorial tone dripping with self-righteous, “if you don’t want to be called these things, stop being the way you are” privilege.

It was gross, in other words. I tweeted about it throughout the day on Sunday, when it ran, as I learned more about the author or different things occurred to me. Most of the rest of my tweets from that day were about football, which meant that I got some confused replies from people who follow me because they like when I make fun of Matt Schaub. I’m not transgender, and I don’t have any close friends or family who are, so why was I treating that editorial like it was personal? I am a dude who is straight and cisgender (that is, someone whose gender identity matches their biology) and who seems to have no stake in this fight.

Here’s why I take transgender issues personally… Keep reading »

CUNY Accused Of Discriminating Against Pregnant Student

Today's Lady News photo
  • The City University of New York has been cited with a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights for allowing the discrimination against a 27-year-old pregnant student. Stephanie Stewart was told by a teacher that she could not make up homework or tests due to pregnancy-related absences, including labor and delivery. She was told by CUNY that professors are allowed to make their own rules about students making up work — despite the fact the federal law Title IX prohibits sex discrimination, including against pregnant students with medically necessary absences. Like, oh, giving birth! I’ll be curious to watch how this pans out. [National Women's Law Center] Keep reading »

lingerie football league

“Imagine if fondue wanted to end its association with melted cheese.”

This is how ESPN reported on plans by the Lingerie Football League to rebrand themselves into a classier institution. Good luck with that!  They’re trying to be taken seriously as an actual football team for women … as opposed to, say, a sexist travesty of athleticism exploiting the willingness of some women who love sports so much they’re willing to play football in bootyshorts if that’s the only way they can do it. Wyoming Introduces “Fetal Heartbeat” Bill To Further Restrict Abortion

Today's Lady News photo
  • Republicans in Wyoming state legislature have introduced a “fetal heartbeat” bill that would criminalize abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. Currently, Wyoming’s law bans abortions after the fetus has “reached viability,” which is generally around 23 weeks. But a fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, which would drastically affect women’s choices.  [Think Progress]

Okay, I’m pretty sure that the UK’s Daily Mail just makes shit up. But I am fairly sure that chivalry died one morning a month ago, when a man shoved me out of the way at the subway station to run up the stairs ahead of me. So even if this Daily Mail piece claiming “research” suggests women are suspicious of chivalrous men because our manners have coarsened so much is bullshit, I’m included to believe there’s an element of truth to it. Indonesian Judge Says “In A Rape Case Both The Rapist And The Victim Enjoy It”

Well, here’s an offensive and insensitive comment about rape victims that truly takes the cake.

An Indonesian judge who is a candidate for the Indonesian Supreme Court was asked whether the death penalty was a fitting punishment for rape. Here is how Muhammad Daming Sanusi answered the question, according to CNN:

“Consideration needs to be taken thoroughly for the imposition of death penalty for a rapist because in a rape case both the rapist and the victim enjoy it.”

Iran Considers Requiring Single Women To Get Permission From Father Before Traveling Abroad

Pat Robertson Basically Tells A Kid His Parents’ Marriage Is Dissolving Because The Mother Is Ugly

pat robertson

“The romance is obviously going out of the marriage. You know, it may be your mom isn’t as sweet as you think she is; she may be kind of hard-nosed.

A woman came to a preacher I know — it’s so funny. She was awful looking. Her hair was all torn up, she was overweight and looked terrible. And she said, ‘Oh, Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink.’ And the preacher looked at her and he said, ‘Madam, if I were married to you, I’d start to drink too.’”

– Priceless relationship tips from televangelist Pat Robertson on “The 700 Club,” trying to help a 17-year-old who is concerned his father is ignoring his mother. I think we should give Robertson his own column on The Frisky, so he can share his unique perspective on love with us all. Amelia, what sort of budget do we have for this? [Queerty]
