Ever? Beyoncé has written an essay for The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back From The Brink, an investigation by journalist Maria Shriver in conjunction with the Center For American Progress, on the status of women in America today. Beyoncé’s essay, “Gender Equality Is A Myth,” can be read in the full report, which can be downloaded for free here.

  • Good news in Today’s Lady News, for once: “Saturday Night Live” has added two Black women to its writing staff beginning this month. LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones are both comediennes who were discovered during recent auditions held by executive producer Lorne Michaels, with the express purpose of adding a Black female to the cast. “SNL” announced earlier this week that it had cast Sasheer Zamata, a performer with the Upright Citizens Brigade. She’ll join the show as a featured player on the January 18th episode hosted by Drake. Congratulations, ladies! [Hollywood Reporter]

  • Transgender actress Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia, the trans woman on “Orange Is The New Black,” and model Carmen Carrera appeared yesterday on “Katie” and Katie Couric kept pushing the issue of their genitalia. Fast foward to 2 minutes and 45 seconds into this video where Laverne explains to Katie what focusing on transitions — the surgeries, the hormones — takes the attention away from the real issues that face trans folks every day: discrimination, violence, lack of legal protections. “By focusing on bodies, we don’t focus on the lived realities of that oppression and that discrimination,” she says. Transgender Woman Cece McDonald To Be Released From Men’s Prison

  • CeCe McDonald, a transgender Black woman who was sentenced to 41 months in a men’s prison, will be released. CeCe was attacked in Minneapolis by a group of people yelling racist and bigoted slurs, one of whom also threw a drink at her. CeCe stabbed and killed one of the men and claimed self-defense. She eventually plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter. Her arrest has drawn international attention because not only because she was defending herself against an attack, but because she was sentenced to a prison full of men. [MSNBC]
  • The Supreme Court has halted same-sex marriage in Utah, where it was legalized on December 20 and quickly appealed by the state. Around 900 gay and lesbian couples have married in UT since the emergency order was handed down today. [TIME]
  • Ma’lik Richmond, the high school student convicted in the sexual assault of a female classmate in Steubenville, Ohio, has been released from a federal detention facility. [Reuters] Keep reading »
