Harrod’s In London Debuts Gender Neutral Toy Store

Today's Lady News photo
  • Harrod’s, the famous department store in London, has finally debuted their gender-neutral toy store in which toys are grouped by theme, rather than “boys” and “girls.” The toy store has sections for stuffed animals, books, candy, and other toys but doesn’t stick to an exclusively pink or blue color palette. Very cool!  [The Mary Sue]

RIP, Iconic Feminist Shulamith Firestone

shulamith firestone

Shulamith Firestone, an iconic figure in the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, has died at age 67. Firestone was the author of The Dialectic of Sex: The Case For Feminist Revolution, which she penned at age 25 and which became one of the key texts of second-wave feminism. Dialectic, which was reissued in 2003 by the publisher Farrar, Strauss & Giroux, put forth a feminist theory that feud the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Sigmund Freud, Frederick Engels and Karl Marx. Firestone was also the co-founder of the group New York Radical Women, a late ’60s feminist group that famously protested the 1968 Miss America Pageant, and edited various journals about radical feminism. Rest in peace, Ms. Firestone. [Tablet Mag; The Villager]

Political theater like the Republican and Democratic National Conventions are a big swamp of blerrgghhh to me. My opinion is that it’s all just a dog-and-pony show and not really the best way to get to know a candidate, their viewpoints, or their cronies at all.

But yes, it’s still a big to-do. What happens is important in the sense that it gets a lot of press coverage. So in the interest of being a well-informed member of the populace, here are 5 things to know about what happened at last night’s Republican National Convention: Keep reading »

Republican Tom Smith Compares Rape To Sex Out Of Wedlock

  • Alright, Republicans, you can go home now. Tom Smith of Pennsylvania wins for the most absurdly offensive thing that could be said about rape and ladies who be havin’ promiscuous sex. The Tea Party-endorsed Smith, who is challenging Democratic Senator Bob Casey, actually compared rape to having a child out of wedlockin some misguided attempt to appear empathetic. He was asked by an Associated Press reporter, “How would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter who, God forbid, would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will? Do you have a way to explain that?” And the conversation went on as follows:

Tom Smith: I lived something similar to that with my own family. She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to.. she chose they way I thought. No don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t rape.

    AP: Similar how?

Smith: Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.

    AP:  That’s similar to rape?

Smith: No, no, no, but … put yourself in a father’s situation, yes. It is similar. But, back to the original, I’m pro-life, period.

So, basically, getting pregnant from consensual sex on our wedlock is as bad as rape ... for their fathers. Of course. Who will think of the dads when a woman is raped?! Not only is this gravely offensive to rape victims, but it’s the very definition of the word paternalism. [Think Progress]

sex strike

When the women of the small African country of Togo want something, they truly take one for the team: in order to urge the president of Togo to resign, the women are holding a sex strike. A civil rights group called Let’s Save Togo is encouraging women to withhold sex from their husbands for one week in hopes it will push men to oust the current president. (At least one man already has suggested a shorter time period — two days — instead.) I confess to not understanding much about the culture of Togo but it seems that even withholding sex as part of a political  protest might not be easy for wives: One woman told the AP it will be “easy for me to observe it” but she is “not sure” her husband would “accept” the strike; another woman told the AP that “I know my husband will not let me complete it … He likes that too much.” Sex strikes have had successes before, however: The leader of the women’s wing of Let’s Save Togo said the group is taking their cue from Liberian women, whose 2003 sex strike helped bring peace to the country. And of course there is the famous Greek play “Lysistrata.” Good luck, ladies. [San Francisco State]
