The student union of  University of Edinburgh banned the Robin Thicke song as part of a policy called “End Rape Culture & Lad Banter On Campus,” which is seeking to make the campus safer sexually. Students apparently became aware of the song after it was played by a school DJ last weekend, who was instructed by a campus employee to “fade” the song. Keep reading »

A court in India found four men guilty of the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old New Delhi woman on December 16 last year. The victim, whose father identified her publicly as a medical student named Jyoti Singh Pandey, was attacked with a male friend on a moving bus and sexually assaulted with a metal rod. She was so badly injured that she had to be flown to Singapore to have her intestines removed. She eventually succumbed to her injuries. Singh Pandey’s murder was one of the first high-profile sexual assaults and murders of women and girls in India, which led to the country enacting tougher laws to punish rapists and hold police accountable for ignoring sexualized violence.

Her four attackers were convicted on 11 counts of rape and murder. (A fifth attacker committed suicide in prison and a sixth was under age 18 at the time of the gang rape and was sentenced to three years in a reformatory.) Their sentencing, which includes the possibility of hanging, will be handed down tomorrow. Singh Pandey’s family is pushing for the death penalty. [Toronto Star] [Photo of gavel via Shutterstock]

The Soapbox: Why Do We Feel Ashamed For Being Sexually Harassed?

sexual harassment

It ended as quickly as it started. I felt his hand squeeze my butt, heard him shout “Nice!” and caught a glimpse of his back as he bolted off the subway car. I stood there, clutching the metal pole, utterly paralyzed. Did that really just happen? Did a random man just grab me and proceed to proudly proclaim to the B train that he had violated me?

Yes. It did.

I stood there, stunned. I began looking back and forth, desperately searching for a forgiving pair of eyes, a sympathetic nod of the head. Instead, I saw two young men smirking at me, their eyes scanning my Betsey Johnson dress, as if to remind me that what had just happened, if it was anything at all, was something I had brought on myself. The arrest of five players on the Vanderbilt football team this summer regarding an alleged gang rape shocked Nashville and college football fans across the nation. Now, a new BuzzFeed article sheds more light about the alleged incident. To say the details are troubling is to put it mildly: the victim had been out partying on the night of the incident with one of the guys, who then allegedly took her back to his dorm while she was unconscious, where he and his teammates sexually violated her and filmed it.
