Dysfunctional Couple Of The Day: Husband Locks Wife In Shed For Singing “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead” About His Dead Mother

If you’re single and hating it, let this supremely screwed up couple be a shining example of what you are NOT looking for in a relationship. UK couple Andrew and Beverly Salmon’s fight began when Beverly received a phone call from a man who Andrew suspected she was having an affair with. Instead of owning up to the affair, Beverly began to sing “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead” on a loop, in reference to Andrew’s recently deceased mother. Keep reading »

RIP Margaret Pellegrini, One Of The Last Living Munchkins From "Wizard Of Oz"
"The Wizard Of Oz" Will Never Die

Margaret Pellegrini, one of the last living munchkins from “The Wizard of Oz,” passed away yesterday in her Phoenix home at the age of 89. You might remember her as one of the “sleepy head” munchkins — the one who wore a flower pot on her head. In the video clip above, she talks about her memories of Judy Garland on set — she was only 15 at the time. Described as a “great lady” with a “robust personality,” Pellegrini spent much of her time touring local schools and sharing her stories about her “Wizard of Oz” experience. Her favorite moral being: “There are two roads in life that you can take — the wrong road and the right road. And remember, there really is no place like home.”

The last two surviving munchkins are Jerry Maren, 93 (of the Lollipop Guild) and Ruth Duccini, 95. In Pellegrini’s honor, I’ve included her famous munchkin scene after the jump.[USA Today] Keep reading »

“Wizard Of Oz” Meets Haute Couture

“Storytelling” is an exhibit that went up in Dublin last month. Design duo Harmless Creatures recreated The Scarecrow (made of hay), Tin Man (made from hand-shredded cards) and the Cowardly Lion (made of VHS tape) from “The Wizard of Oz.” Each costume took over 40 hours to create and were “assembled like a suit of armor, protection against a world where everyone else has the brains, the heart or the courage,”says the Harmless Creatures website. God, I love this. It’s so haunting and poignant kind of like the story. After the jump is a video that accompanied the exhibition. [Buzzfeed] Keep reading »

Animatronic Wizard Of Oz: What’s The Weirdest Thing In Your Town?

I grew up in a small town in New Jersey that was fairly boring. But! The town next to me? Where my high school was? That was a whole other story. Mullica Hill, NJ, happens to house one of the stranger toy stores/”Wizard of Oz” memorials in the world. The Follow The Yellow Brick Road Doll Toy Museum & Boutique is actually not so much a traditional toy store, as a toy hoarding paradise, spread out over a couple of acres. And the owner, when not collecting out-of-production Furbys or plush E.T. dolls, busies himself working on the homemade painted yellow brick road and animatronic collection of “Wizard of Oz” characters he has built and installed around his backyard. Yes, this man has created the “Wizard of Oz” on his property. In wacky DIY style (that’s me in one of his Cowardly Lion cutouts, pictured). And once a year he invites CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTORS to stage a weekend long battle on his property. Yes, amidst fake Wicked Witches of the East and Dorothy, there is an annual Civil War reenactment. It makes perfect sense.

So I want to know: what’s the weirdest thing in your hometown? Keep reading »

Michelle Williams To Play Glinda The Good Witch

If I could take a trip anywhere in the world, I’d choose … Oz. As in the place over the rainbow, not the prison. So I am very excited about Disney’s upcoming “Oz: The Great And Powerful,” a prequel to everyone’s favorite tale about a girl following the yellow brick road. The cast so far is stellar. The very busy James Franco will play the guy behind the curtain. Mila Kunis will play Theodora, who goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West. Rachel Weisz will be Evanora, the already evil Wicked Witch of the East.

And now, the movie finally has its Glinda, after much debate. Keep reading »

James Franco To Play The Wizard. You Know, The Wizard Of Oz.

I have a theory that James Franco must have found a genie in a bottle at some point during his life, and wished to have 48 hours in a single day while the rest of us only get 24. Not only is the dude gearing up to host the Oscars, working on a zillion graduate degrees, directing movie versions of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, starring in a Linda Lovelace biopic and heading to Broadway—but as of this morning, he has also been tapped to play the Wizard in “Oz, The Great and Powerful.” The film is a “Wizard of Oz” prequel that tells the story of how the dude ended up in a hot air balloon to Oz, later standing behind a curtain in the Emerald City. Apparently, he was a con man who had the hots for Glinda, the good witch. Keep reading »

Nancy Pelosi Cast As The “Wicked Witch Of The West” In Campaign Ad

She’s mellllllllting … and she’s the Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi is the cackling Wicked Witch of the West in a new “Wizard of Oz”-themed campaign commercial by Republican Congressional candidate John Dennis. An actress playing Pelosi flies in on a jet, jabbing Dorothy, Toto and pals with the end of her broom and shrieking that her flying monkey henchmen, the IRS, will come after them. That is, until John Dennis throws a bucket of water in her face. Keep reading »

“The Wizard Of Dogz” Is As Cute As You Imagine

How do you make a cherished classic film even better? You replace the entire cast with costumed canines! In “Wizard of Dogz,” Toto is tossed aside as the animal star, reduced to a mere stuffed animal. The rest of the characters are replaced by precious pets in costumes that I wish my cats had the patience to wear long enough for me to get a picture. There is only one problem with this animal imitation—once again a feline is stuck with the role of the villain. This furthers the stereotype that cats are evil, and prevents them from getting more substantial work in Hollywood. I hope to see a day where cats are embraced as a positive cinematic element, instead of pigeon-holed as criminal masterminds and bad guys. How about ferrets instead? They seem pretty smelly and evil to me. Anyhoo, it is time for me to step off my soapbox and time for you to watch the cuteness overload that is “Wizard of Dogz.” Keep reading »
