In case I haven’t complained about it loudly enough lately, I (and most of the Frisky staff) really hate winter. Another polar vortex is threatening to descend upon us here in New York and in several other unfortunate parts of the US, and when those 10-degree days set in, it’s hard not to feel like your life is pretty much over for the next 4-6 months. I refuse to waste roughly half of my life being personally offended by the damn weather without at least trying to embrace it for once. The bloating of Thanksgiving and the bloodshed of Black Friday are behind us, and now Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s celebrations are ahead of us. It’s the most joyous time of the year, right? You’re ridiculously happy and emotionally stable right now, aren’t you? Not so much? Yeah, me neither. For one thing, we’re down to about three hours of cold, gray daylight every day. Seriously, yesterday I thought I’d pop out for a walk at the reasonable time of 3:45, but it was already so dark I would have needed one of those spelunking headlamps to safely navigate my neighborhood streets. At the risk of sounding like an emo poem I wrote in 7th grade, constant darkness outside is enough to make me feel constantly dark inside.

Everyone talks about the winter blues. I don’t really get the blues, more the blahs. I’m not sitting around moping. I’m pissed off. My symptoms include not being able to sleep at all or wanting to sleep too much or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep, getting very easily aggravated by everything — people, places, inanimate objects (I yelled at my cell phone last night) and only wanting to watch “Downton Abbey” or “Top Chef” while consuming large amounts of dark chocolate. This is where I’m at right now. Maybe I should go to London where an art collective installed a giant fake sun in Trafalgar Square. The fun (fake+sun), which is as bright as 60,000 lights bulbs, is said to be boosting the moods of all who bask in its glow. This is what I need! A fake sun! We are less than three weeks away from the shortest day of the year and if you’re anything like me, you’re starting to feel the effects of the winter blues — or Seasonal Affective Disorder — begin to set in. Guys, fall/winter gloom has officially arrived. By the late afternoon it’s already dark out! I don’t know about you, but the lack of serious sunlight hours are starting to get to me. On the east coast, anyway, we’re averaging around 10 hours of sun light a day, which sounds like a lot, but isn’t really, when you consider how many of those are spent indoors. It stinks when you get out of work and it’s already dark out — even if you’re not one of the 10 million people clinically affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the winter can be a difficult time on your psyche.
