The bloating of Thanksgiving and the bloodshed of Black Friday are behind us, and now Christmas,┬áHanukkah, and New Year’s celebrations are ahead of us. It’s the most joyous time of the year, right? You’re ridiculously happy and emotionally stable right now, aren’t you? Not so much? Yeah, me neither. For one thing, we’re down to about three hours of cold, gray daylight every day.┬áSeriously, yesterday I thought I’d pop out for a walk at the reasonable time of 3:45, but it was already so dark I would have needed one of those spelunking headlamps to safely navigate my neighborhood streets. At the risk of sounding like an emo poem I wrote in 7th grade, constant darkness outside is enough to make me feel constantly dark inside.

Whether it’s family drama, bad weather, relationship problems, financial issues, cabin fever, or some crappy combination of all of the above, a lot of people I know are having a rough time right now. How can you navigate the hyper-joyful holiday seasons when you’re not feeling so merry yourself? Well, here are 8 things to try… Keep reading »

Everyone talks about the winter blues. I don’t really get the blues, more the blahs. I’m not sitting around moping. I’m pissed off. My symptoms include not being able to sleep at all or wanting to sleep too much or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep, getting very easily aggravated by everything — people, places, inanimate objects (I yelled at my cell phone last night) and only wanting to watch “Downton Abbey” or “Top Chef” while consuming large amounts of dark chocolate. This is where I’m at right now. Maybe I should go to London where an art collective installed a giant fake sun in Trafalgar Square. The fun (fake+sun), which is as bright as 60,000 lights bulbs, is said to be boosting the moods of all who bask in its glow. This is what I need! A fake sun! After the jump, some more ideas to get rid of winter blahs. Keep reading »

20 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

We are less than three weeks away from the shortest day of the year and if you’re anything like me, you’re starting to feel the effects of the winter blues — or Seasonal Affective Disorder — begin to set in. A few weeks ago, you shared some of your ideas for combating the winter blues, and after the jump is a roundup of some of those suggestions plus a few of my own to get us motivated to tackle the long months ahead. Frisky Reader Advice: How You Deal With The Winter Blues

If you thought this fall/winter was gnarly before, get ready for it to get a whole lot worse: This weekend saw the end of Daylight Saving Time, which means we’ll lose another hour of sunlight. For some, that’s no big deal, but for the rest of us, it means we’ll need to hunker down and make a plan.

After the jump, some great winter blues advice, straight from you, dear Frisky readers. Keep reading »

How Do You Deal With The Winter Blues?

Guys, fall/winter gloom has officially arrived. By the late afternoon it’s already dark out! I don’t know about you, but the lack of serious sunlight hours are starting to get to me. On the east coast, anyway, we’re averaging around 10 hours of sun light a day, which sounds like a lot, but isn’t really, when you consider how many of those are spent indoors. It stinks when you get out of work and it’s already dark out — even if you’re not one of the 10 million people clinically affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the winter can be a difficult time on your psyche. So we’re wondering, what do you do to combat the winter blues? Tell us in the comments! Keep reading »

How Do You Chase The Winter Blues?

It’s around this time of year that things just start to feel heavy. No one wants to go out. The social season hits a lull. The novelty of snow has gone from being charming to irritating. Your flights are delayed. Your skin is dry. Your pipes are frozen. Life. Sucks. And if you tell me to go to Sharper Image to get myself a light therapy box, I will slap you.

We know there’s not a lot to do to get around winter (save for moving to a tropical climate) and most of the ideas people start throwing around this time of year is stuff you know you won’t do or something so corny (like putting up a picture of a beach in your cubicle), it wouldn’t even fool a 5-year-old. So here are some of our slightly less conventional ideas to get out of that seasonal funk. Share your own in the comments below. Keep reading »
