Star Trek: Bead-Dazzled

Ever wanted to run your hands all over Captain Kirk? Well, you’re not the only perverted geek. Artist Devorah Sperber has strung along Spock, McCoy, Kirk, Sulu, and even Uhura. She nailed them all by being crafty and recreated scenes from a vintage Star Trek episode in bead and spool curtains. The pieces are as colorful as the late sixties and as awesome as the space explorer hunks themselves. Sperber, inspired by reruns on Spike TV, has elevated fan art to high art. Celebrity Crushes: Didn’t EVERYONE Have One?

Apparently not. Yesterday, Simcha and I were comparing notes on our first celebrity crushes — my first serious one was Wil Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation (waving my nerd flag!), while Simcha was hot for The Count from Sesame Street. Even now, Simcha says she still goes for guys who seem a little like vampires, whereas Wil was my first and last dork crush after he replied to my loving fan letter with a generic postcard of himself decked out in Batman memorabilia (hat, shirt, buttons on his light jean jacket, the works). But up until that point I was convinced we were destined for each other. Talking about all of this with Simcha made me want to find out who Emily and Catherine’s crushes were when they were boy crazy tweens. Star Trek’s Wil Wheaton Ditched By The Suicide Girls

Have you ever had one of those experiences where you found out about something exciting and then discovered that it no longer exists all in the same day? I am having one of those moments. Nerve Scanner says that Wil Weaton, who played Ensign Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation has been laid off from his blogger position on alt.porn site SuicideGirls.com. A) WTF? How did I not know that Wil Wheaton blogged for such an awesome sex site? B) How does a raging nerd like Wheaton get a gig like that? and C) Why did he get cut loose?

Before I continue, it’s probably important that I confess that I grew up a bit of a Trekkie and while I have outgrown the geeky obsession, I still have a soft spot for ol’ Wil, who was the first recipient of a love/fan letter from yours truly. It’s embarrassing, but we all have our skeletons.

Anyway, it seems that Wheaton, who wrote a column called “Geek In Review”, got the ax along with a bunch of other bloggers and writers due to budget cuts. Sigh. Guess I’m going to have to relive my adolescent space sex fantasies through the archives. [Nerve.com] Keep reading »
