With September on the horizon (dun dun dunnnnn), celebrities are often the first ones to convert their looks from beach-ready basics to the sultrier trappings of fall. Whitney Port isn’t someone I normally look at and think, Celebrity!, mostly because I’m a huge snob, but she does seem sharply attuned to the revolving seasonal trends. Dark eggplant-hued shadows, liners, and lipsticks are all over the radar for autumn, with cool-toned mauve shades rising to popularity as well. The former star of “The City” presented her eponymous clothing line at the Fashion Festival in Sydney (where, it’s worth nothing, it’s high summer), and chose a very purple look for the occasion, complementing a plum lip gloss with a similar shade around her eyes. While there isn’t anything fundamentally wrong with this pairing, I can’t help but feel like it makes the usually radiant Whitney look a bit… under the weather.
I like to think that “The City” and “The Hills” alum Whitney Port occasionally has a David Byrne “This is not my beautiful house, this is not my beautiful life, how did I get here?” moment. Because hey, she seems relatively sane and well-adjusted and, I dunno, way smarter than most of her reality TV compatriots. Like, she should really just be going to college, getting a masters in bookbinding or psychology and living quietly on the coast. But instead, this is Whitney Port’s reality — shilling a clothing line at the Magic trade show in Las Vegas. And wearing this outfit, which almost, almost works, but somehow doesn’t. It’s a slow day out there in celeb land. Perhaps because everybody’s waiting with baited breath to see what’ll happen to Lil’ Robsten after all this humping and car makeout-ing…who knows? But even a little Kristen and Rob drama couldn’t keep Whitney Port from getting her hair did. Here she is leaving the Neil George Hair Salon, presumably post-blow out — and she looks casual perfect. We’re especially loving the white sunglasses. Nice going, Whit-Whit!
I can’t quite tell you why, but I was pretty darn addicted to MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” and, to a lesser degree, “The City.” Nothing ever actually happened on these shows and the conversations and “characters” were basically the opposite of fascinating, but maybe it was their incredible blandness that made it hard to turn away. I think I am going overboard trying to justify this particular habit — I just like TV that temporarily lobotomizes me. Artist Karin Bubas is probably on my wavelength, because she’s created these portraits of “The Hills” stars at their most, um, poignant. I kind of dig the soft focus glow of them — they remind me of the ’80s Sweet Valley High book covers. I’m not saying I’m planning on buying one, but if someone gave me the drawing of Lauren with the single mascara-tainted tear stain on her cheek, I would make a space on my wall for it. At first, I wasn’t sure if I should post this look as a “Well Played,” “A Lot Of Look,” or “Love It Or Leave It.” In some ways, with the animal print VANS and printed leggings, it is a lot of look. And for some, that look may be kind of fugs. But I think Whitney Port totally pulls it off and exudes a feminine, skater-girl vibe. Could I rock this? No. But I don’t do leggings of any sort. Our favorite character on MTV’s series “The City” was never super saccharine Whitney Port or hyper-villainous Olivia Palermo–it was Elle PR head Erin Kaplan. Kaplan’s side-eye glare and over-boiled frustration said what we all felt about Palermo’s conniving ways. Well, now she’s got a new gig — as head PR honcho at Teen Vogue. The switch over to Vogue‘s younger sis publication comes on the heels of talk that Teen Vogue may be debuting a reality series of its own. [Fashionista] Keep reading »
