Hypothyroidism Credited For Model’s Figure

Last month we asked if you thought Karolina Kurkova, the Victoria’s Secret model under fire for gaining weight, was fat. Kurkova wasn’t even included in pre-show materials for the 2008 Victoria’s Secret fashion show because it was a last minute decision to let her strut the runway. After snacking on pretty much nothing but veggies and “green juice,” she managed to lose enough weight to be included. “She really porked out,” a woman at the show was overheard whispering. “It’s good she dropped a little bit of weight, but really … ” Keep reading »

Genius Or Crazy: The Toilet Seat Scale

Too lazy to go to the bathroom and weight yourself? Soon you may be able to do both at the same time! Designer Haikun Deng designed this toilet seat with a built-in digital scale, so, basically, you’ll be able to see how much weight you lose each time you relieve yourself. It’s only a concept at this point, because, well, it would be kind of gross to be able to see how much your waste weighs, but it could be very useful for lazy people who are trying to watch what they eat. However, the seat/scale might be a little too useful for people with eating disorders — completely thwarting the “Bulemia is curable” toilet seat ad campaign. [Gizmodo] Keep reading »

Lipstick and Playboy Economics

If history is any indication, you may want to stock up on your favorite lipstick before every tube is sold out, and go ahead, splurge on that cupcake — curves are coming back in vogue. Since our recent economic crisis, people are once again talking about the Leading Lipstick Indicator, a surprisingly reliable theory that suggests consumers turn to inexpensive little treats, like lipstick, when they start freaking out about the future. For example, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, lipstick sales doubled. The term was coined by Leonard Lauder (chairman of Estee Lauder), “who consistently found that during tough economic times, his lipstick sales went up.” Hmm…Sephora has been unusually crowded lately (last time I was there, I couldn’t find an available mirror to save my look, I mean life). Thoughts From Guys On Our IM: Men Have Body Image Issues Too

We all have insecurities don’t we? When I was a teenager, I was hit with a triple dose of the fuglies, getting glasses, braces, and a raging case of acne within a two month period. I don’t think the insecurity that arose during that time has ever gone away completely, though now I worry more about my muffin top than I do about my skin. That said, some women obsess way too much about their so-called “imperfections”. But what about dudes? Do they spend hours starring in the mirror, willing the gigantic whiteheads between their brows to go away? I decided to ask the guys on my IM about men and body insecurities. When none of them brought up the size of their penis, I, of course, asked. Keep reading »

Cliques Determine How Teenage Girls Think About Weight

According to a new study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, the peer groups teenage girls identify with influences how they think about weight. Among the group of 236 girls between 13 and 18 who were surveyed, those who identified with athletic peers, aka jocks, weren’t very concerned about their weight; burnouts believed their peers valued thinness; girls who didn’t belong to any particular group were most likely to use “slimming strategies”; and, perhaps most surprisingly, girls who identified with non-conformist peers were more likely to be actively trying to lose weight. We thought “non-conformist” meant you didn’t care about society’s standards, including those concerning weight. Maybe they’re worried about fitting into their skinny jeans? Supermodel Karolina Kurkova Gets Called Fat

Oh no they didn’t! Karolina Kurkova, the Victoria’s Secret supermodel that Elle recently posted about in the forums, has been called fat by the Brazilian press. The smack talk started after a show in Sao Paulo, where Kurkova walked the runway with more meat on her bones than usual. And gasp, she has cellulite on her booty. Um, good for her! And for the record, we think she looks sexier than ever. [Fox News]

Education Will Make You Healthier

Women who are more highly educated have a healthier average weight than those who are less educated, a comparison of data from several countries revealed. BUT! this does not mean that smart women are skinnier. In countries where the majority of the population is obese, women with more education weigh less, and in countries where the majority of the population is underweight, highly educated women weigh more. I think the most reasonable explanation for this is that education costs money, and women who have enough money to pay for education also have enough money to pay for 1) food, or 2) a gym membership. J.Lo Hewitt’s Got Back

While on vacation in Hawaii with her fiancée, a bikini clad Jennifer Love Hewitt got her cellulite snapped by paparazzi and then ridiculed on the internet by sites like TMZ and Perez Hilton. Jennifer “just call me more to Love” Hewitt has fought back by openly admitting to liking her body and encouraging other woman to “put on a bikini — put it on and stay strong.” Hey, maybe she can Lance-ify this tragedy with a new Bikini Strong rubber bracelet. That’s something we can all get behind, even if it takes our itty-bitty bathing suits a few more months to come out for beach weather. Keep reading »
