Mom From "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" Loses 240 Pounds

If you’ve ever seen the film adaptation of Peter Hedges’ novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape you’ll remember Darlene Cates. She played the matriarch of the Grape clan, Bonnie Grape, a woman who’d ballooned to more than 500 pounds and relied on her kids to take care of her. Cates, who’d never appeared in films prior to “Grape,” has a compelling back story. She was spotted by “Grape” director Lasse Halstrom after she appeared on an episode of “The Sally Jessy Raphael Show,” about people who were homebound because of their weight.

In a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News Cates revealed that after the movie, her weight continued to  be an issue. In 2011, she spent much of the year in the hospital, suffering from weight-related complications. But recently, Cates lost more than 240 pounds, and is down to 331 pounds. She’s looking forward to acting again, but refuses to take roles that lambast or ridicule overweight people. Cates still has trouble walking, but says that she no longer suffers from diabetes and has started doing physical therapy. Here’s hoping we see her on the big screen again soon. [Huffington Post]

8 Celebs Who Swear By The “Sex Diet”

When celebs share their diet and exercise tips, we listen. Even if the tips involve things like eating only baby food or jumping around in Kangoo boots. Hey, whatever works! Kim Kardashian has dropped some weight since becoming Kimye. How? Allegedly, the reality star shed seven pounds in seven days on the “sex diet.” An anonymous friend of Kim’s told the National Enquirer that the sex diet is code for “having regular sex, that tends to burn calories and kill the appetite. Losing seven pounds in seven days means being a very naughty girl.” Now, this is a diet we’d try without hesitation. It doesn’t even involve juice cleanses or hours on the stairmaster. Just good old fashioned sex! Click through to see more celebs who swear by the sex diet. [Music Rooms]

“Weight Loss” Perfume Sounds Just About As Legitimate As Any “Weight Loss” Anything

There is no shortage of bizarre products and tools claiming mystical weight loss properties that will have you dropping pounds as if the basic rites of diet and exercise never existed. My personal favorite pitch thus far is that of SlimScents, which urges you to, and I quote, “harness the POWER of an EXCITING new research breakthrough” to “sniff yourself thin.” Convincing, no?

Alas, my beloved SlimScents have been upstaged by the latest and greatest in fraudulent weight loss technology: Prends-moi, now available on the British market, is “the world’s first slimming fragrance,” designed to “slim with pleasure” using ingredients that release endorphins already present in the body to trigger a “pleasure message” within the brain. (Also noteworthy: egregious overuse/abuse of the word “pleasure.”) Keep reading »

Earlier this week, a federal health advisory panel recommended that obese adults receive intensive counseling in order to address the mounting obesity epidemic in America. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force encouraged doctors to identify and aid obese patients by providing counseling, or referring them to a weight loss-oriented program.

Specially targeted: patients with a body mass index of 30 or more — which is currently one in three Americans. Keep reading »

8 Dumbest Extreme Weight Loss Methods

Losing weight isn’t easy. I mean, it’s easy to SAY you’ll “eat less and exercise” but what do you eat? Which exercises do you do? Are there any shortcuts? If not, are there at least any LONGcuts, that will definitely work? Sadly, I don’t have the answers to these questions. I’m a blogger who drank 70 ounces of chicken gravy for lunch. Yes, I’m disgustingly obese, but I get my self-esteem in other ways, like my being incredible at lovemaking, and knowing how to throw my fast-food wrappers directly into the garbage can from distances of over 20 feet. I’m getting off topic here, but the point is, I don’t have a lot of great tips on how to lose weight, but I do have a bunch of terrible ones. And they involve, among other things, the techniques in this gallery. Read on! Read more…

In case you haven’t heard, Kelly Clarkson has a new boyfriend (who just happens to be Reba McEntire’s stepson, Brandon Blackstock), and she’s also looking noticeably slimmer lately. Coincidence? She says no:

“I have a boyfriend, and if I’m being completely honest, no one likes to be not toned when you are dating someone. I’m eating better and working out, but I’ve always fluctuated within 20 pounds. I tone whenever I want, and I chose to now because my boyfriend and I are both really into it. But we don’t work out together. We did that once and I didn’t like huffing and puffing. I didn’t like looking all red and gross, so I don’t do that.”

This got me thinking about how our relationship status often affects our bodies and body image… Keep reading »

I started watching what I ate around third grade. A boy in my class had made a crack about my weight — an aspect of my physical self I’d never even pondered before — and, suddenly, I was self-conscious about and uneasy in my body. I didn’t dive into actual, formal diets until much later, but third grade marked the beginning of my weight obsession. An obsession that lasted beyond my college years. I won’t bore you with the details because honestly? They’re textbook self-loathing and body dysmorphia. My story could be anyone’s. Keep reading »

6 Diet Fads For People Who Will Try Anything Except Exercise

In a landscape littered with unscientific and downright stupid weight loss products, it takes something extra stupid to get our attention. After all, surely nobody is really out there buying… Read more!

I used to be really skinny. So skinny my ribs stuck out.

Everywhere I went, women said, “You’re so skinny! Oh my god. I’m jealous.”

I had friends that were more gorgeous than me, but it was OK, because I was really skinny.

“I wish I was as skinny as you,” they said.

I smiled. I said, “Nah, whatever.” Keep reading »

The Real Reason Why Women Go On Cleanses

What motivates women to do a juice cleanse? Is it that the people who tout its benefits are all glowy and impossibly attractive? Is it that cleansing is a productive way to “detox”? Or is it that you want an easy way to lose weight?

Well, technically, yes. But at the root of it all, no. Keep reading »
