A couple of weeks ago, we started talking about what version of the Rolling Stones’ song “Wild Horses” was our respective fave. Ami is partial to the recent “Voice” contestant cover, while I really love The Sundays version. I decided to put together a playlist with some of my favorite covers, alongside the originals (or at least an earlier version, in some cases) for comparison. The cover versions go first, with the original tracks following them, in the same order. Take a listen, and share with us in the comments your favorite cover song version.

Planning a Mother’s Day get-together? Maybe a formal brunch (if you’re still searching for recipes, we’ve got you covered) or a low-key hangout at your parent’s house? However you’re celebrating this weekend, you’re gonna need some tunes. Preferably some overtly mother-themed songs that span every genre from country to pop to rap. That’s where our Mother’s Day Mix comes in. It’s eclectic, it’s slightly uncomfortable at times, it will probably spark some interesting conversations, and most importantly, it’s all about moms.  Check it out after the jump, and happy Mother’s Day to you and yours! To cap off our Wanderlust content, what could be more fitting than a road trip playlist? Besides a car, gas money, and comfy pants, there’s really nothing more integral to a road trip’s success than a good selection of music. On our recent drive from Oregon to Tennessee, my boyfriend and I didn’t prepare nearly enough music, and we ran out of new tunes somewhere in eastern Wyoming. It was awful. I vowed to never let that happen again, so I polled The Frisky staff for their favorite road trip songs. Some of our selections specifically reference the road trip experience, but most of them are just awesome tunes that match the feeling you get when you see miles and miles of road stretched out in front of you. Check out our Spotify playlist after the jump, and feel free to download it before you hit the open road! Keep reading »

The Violent Femmes said it best: “You can just kiss off into the air.” There’s something awesome about a snarky, diss song. For the sake of brevity, I’ve limited this mix to mostly diss songs of the “kiss off” variety (a separate mix of the best artist-to-artist diss tracks will be forthcoming), directed at ex-lovers, current obsessions and generally shitty people. Take a listen, and share your own favorite kiss-off songs in the comments.  Keep reading »

Happy Friday! We’re stoked because the new movie “The Sapphires,” based on the real life story of the first aboriginal girl group in Australia, is finally in theaters. Jessica is stoked because it stars her Number One Dude Crush Chris O’Dowd, but the rest of us are just excited for the music. In honor of all the awesome girl groups, past and present, we’ve assembled this play list with some of our favorite jams! Some of them aren’t probably technically what you’d call girl groups (more like all-female bands), but you know, we’re flexible.

Tell us your favorite girl group or song in the comments! Keep reading »

Awkward backstory: I was making this playlist and asked a bunch of friends to suggest their favorite “sexy vocalists”. This is a weird category, of course, because it’s not necessarily about a song being about sex, per se; it’s about vocalists who just sound super sexy, with voices full of aching and longing (or whatever). It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re physically attractive (see also: Serge Gainsbourg). I compiled a pretty major list featuring some of my faves — like the Jesus and Mary Chain, Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos (worst band name, great band, though), Pulp and Dean Wareham from Luna — and then a friend suggested Bill Ricchini, who happens to be a dude I actually know. It’s weird to have friends with super sexy singing voices, no? In any case, I am really proud of this super sexy mix and hope you like! Share your favorite super sexy vocalists in the comments, mmkay? Keep reading »

It’s so balls cold out there’s really nothing you can do but cocoon yourself in a warm place and wait for spring. Here’s a playlist to listen to while you’re hibernating from the elements. These tunes are moody and ambient, perfect for the forced introspection of the dog days of winter. Recommended listening: with a mug of hot cocoa and fuzzy socks.  Keep reading »

For much of the mid-2000s I had a side gig playing records. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a DJ, in that I can’t scratch or really beat match, but some friends and I had a lot of fun DJ-ing a regular weekly party for a while. It was in Philly at a club that flaunted the smoking ban. We usually had a pretty packed house, and there was lots of dancing, usually started by me. This playlist is a ton of the songs that I used to play from that era, so feel free to play it for you own dance parties!

This time of year makes me seriously sleepy, what with the sun going down in the middle of the afternoon and everything. That’s why I’ve put together a mix that reflects the quiet, lazy vibe of the weekend. And because we imagine you, like us, are going to spend at least part of the next few days at your childhood home, we’ve included some oldies that might remind you of the stuff you listened to in high school. From Belle & Sebastian to College to the Cocteau Twins and more, we hope you enjoy!
