Shit happens. I’ve lost track of the number of married men I know who have lost their wedding bands. Many men, including my husband, have lost their bands within the first year of marriage. In fact, if you are a married and still have your original wedding band, I applaud you.

The reality is, most men are not used to wearing sentimental jewelry. Thus, generally speaking, they don’t exercise caution when wearing their wedding rings. They don’t consider removing their rings before swimming in the ocean. They are blissfully unaware that their fingers shrink in cold weather, making the ring looser. They have yet to develop a protective reflex, balling their fist to prevent the ring from slipping off the finger. But when the chances of a man losing his wedding band is high, the question becomes, “When you lose your ring, how do you tell your wife?” Here are some dos and don’ts… Keep reading »

Guy Talk: If You’re Married, Wear Your Wedding Ring

With the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton just over two weeks away, Buckingham Palace is letting out daily updates of the impending nuptials. Few bits of news have proved as controversial as the announcement that the future king will forgo a wedding band after he’s married. That decision hasn’t been well received by the press or the public. Even those who take no interest in royalty have been drawn into a debate about the larger issue: should men wear wedding rings? Keep reading »

Is Skipping Rings The New Wedding Trend?

When Prince William and Kate Middleton get married on April 29, Kate will receive a ring made from gold mined in the Welsh mountains that has been in the royal vault since the days of Queen Elizabeth. But Kate will not be slipping a ring on William’s finger. Apparently, William has opted against the tradition of wearing a wedding ring. As a royal spokesperson explains, “There is only going to be one ring, in accordance with the couple’s wishes.” [People]

This has me wondering: is skipping wedding rings becoming a trend? Keep reading »

I Don’t Always Wear My Wedding Ring

I’m back from a girlfriend getaway in paradise. Traveling with a best friend off the beaten path awakened joy in me and soothed my soul, but it also left me wondering: Why can’t I capture that sense of fun and wonder in everyday life? Why do I feel so stuck here in Boston, yet I was free as a bird in Mexico?

One idea: I took off my wedding ring while traveling. I think my naked ring finger gave rise to more open responses and deeper interactions than I would have otherwise experienced. Keep reading »

Is Minnie Driver Secretly Married?

Minnie Driver spent Mother’s Day playing in the park with her son, Henry Story Driver, and, interestingly enough, she was photographed sporting a ring on the finger normally reserved for engagement rings and wedding bands. Minnie’s been mum about her son’s father — and her love life — since announcing her pregnancy back in 2008. Could she have secretly gotten married? We doubt it.

Minnie seems to be one of those people who doesn’t care too much about convention. At her father’s funeral last year, for example, she wore red, rather than the standard black. Why should she be required to save her left ring finger for marital jewelry? Further proof that Minnie hasn’t gone off and wed behind our backs: She was photographed wearing a different ring on the same finger last May. Keep reading »

Live Out A Fairy Tale With Disney Princess Engagement Rings

Disney realized a lot of women want fairy-tale princess weddings like the ones seen in their animated movies, and a couple years ago, they began selling wedding, bridesmaid, and flower-girl dresses based on Belle, Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White, and other princesses. Now, they’re taking the dream one step farther with a line of wedding and engagement rings.

For $1,200 to $6,000 (not including the center stone, known as “semi-mounts” in the biz), Prince Charming can propose with a ring that corresponds to a Disney heroine, created by Kirstie Kelly for Disney for Mouawad. Personally, we’re not sure we want to live out the “happily ever after” fantasy: Disney princesses wear pretty gaudy rings. [Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouawad via Luxist] Keep reading »

Diamonds Aren’t A Girl’s Best Friend

Who am I to argue with the Madison Avenue suits who coined the phrase “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”?

If only diamonds were all we believe them to be. The violence resulting from the diamond mining and trading industry is, in a word, tragic. And, as it turns out, diamonds aren’t even as valuable as we’ve been told. Keep reading »

“Help! I Swallowed My Engagement Ring!”

Your marriage proposal is meant to be romantic. It’s something you’re supposed to remember for the rest of your life. Well this couple will never forget how they got engaged. Reed Harris was trying to be sneaky when he hid an engagement ring in his girlfriend’s Frosty milkshake from Wendy’s. But when she gulped the sweet treat down fast, the ring was lost down her throat and headed for her stomach. X-rays confirmed the ring was chillin’ in her stomach — a bag of prunes and high fiber cereal later, she finally had her rock. But this isn’t the only unusual thing that’s happened to engagement rings and wedding bands. After the jump, five more weird stories that will remind you to never hide something valuable in food.
