Sure, all anyone is talking about these days relating to Washington, D.C., is the inauguration, but there are other things going on in our nation’s capital. Like giant pandas trying to make babies. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, two giant panda’s at the National Zoo, tried to mate throughout the day last Thursday without success. “Because competent mating did not occur,” a statement from the zoo said, vets had to insert some of Tian Tian’s semen into Mei Xiang’s uterus. You might be thinking that these kids just need a few more days of love-making, but, unfortunately, scientists believe giant pants are able to conceive only one or two days a year. And while the couple have successfully given birth to one baby panda, in 2005, they weren’t so lucky in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008. Did you guys ever read the book The Washingtonienne? I didn’t, because I listened to the book on tape. Anyway, The Washingtonienne was a book based on the anonymous blog written by Washington, D.C. political aide, Jessica Cutler a few years back, which detailed her sexual exploits with various high-powered political types (lots of times for money and gifts), including a state Representative or something. Anyway, it was slutty and juicy and had lots of sex in it, including anal. So yeah! HBO has green-lit a pilot! Produced by Sarah Jessica Parker! There’s a lecture and book signing on November 13 in Washington, D.C., featuring a few noted authors and journalists discussing how “hook-up” culture on campus has led to rising numbers of sexual assaults, date rapes, and sexually transmitted infections. Included on the panel is Washington Post scribe Laura Sessions Stapp who coined the term “gray rape” to describe sexual encounters that are not quite consensual but not totally denied either. Her theory was discussed in further detail in an article in September’s Cosmopolitan, which garnered loads of debate on sites like Jezebel and Feministing. Suffice it to say, we’re not sure we’d take the thoughts of someone who thinks having sex with someone while they’re passed out drunk is “gray” rape all that seriously. Keep reading »
