Sexy Shoe Shines: Because Everything Has To Be Sexy Now

Men! Why get a shoe shine when you can get a seXXXy shoe shine? That seems to be the theory behind Star Shine NYC, a new New York City shoe shine shop in the Financial District. At the “Hooters” of shoe shines, as some have called it, for $7, a buxom woman in shorts and a tank top will lean over your shoes as she wipes off the dog doo and polishes them until you can see the reflection of underboob. That won’t appeal to creepy dudes or anything! “It helps that they are very pretty,” a man told DNA Info, refusing to give his name. (I wonder why!) “But the prices are a little high if you don’t get the discount.” Keep reading »

Wall St. 4.3.2013

I am a single, 25-year-old woman who is still in graduate school. I can hardly see down the road to my next assignment deadline, or even what I’ll make for dinner.  Yet the ongoing discourse about women in the workforce has me thinking (and generally pretty terrified) about the future.

In a New York Times article, “Woman in a Man’s World,” Irene Dorner, the chief executive of HSBC USA, shared her regrets about not pushing to change the status quo for more women than just herself while she climbed the finance ladder on Wall Street.

Like Sheryl Sandberg, whose book Lean In has received flack for telling women to be more aggressive, Dorner says there is a “sticky floor” problem in conjunction with the glass ceiling.  She does not necessarily believe that women of Wall Street need to be more like men, but does highlight a difference… Keep reading »

From Wall Street To Waffles: Trading In The Life You Have For The Life You Want

New Yorker Garrett Hoelscher spent three years in investment banking before he decided he really couldn’t take it anymore. That’s when he traded in his business suits for a waffle iron and hatched a plan to sell waffles on the tops of ski mountains. His business, Waffle Shrine, has yet to sell a single waffle, but Hoelscher is hoping he can create a mountaintop waffle empire in the next few years. Keep reading »

Five Women Who Paved The Way On Wall Street

Wall Street is mostly a man’s world. Even as our economy has fallen apart, most of the people making headlines are male (and some go as far as to believe the collapse of the financial markets might not have happened if there had been more women involved). But Wall Street’s minority is being honored with an exhibit at the Museum of American Finance, an affiliate of the Smithsonian in New York City. “Women of Wall Street” runs through Jan. 16, 2010, and features five historical and five contemporary females who made a name for themselves in finance. After the jump, a quick intro to Wall Street women who led the way — and inspired us to contribute a little more regularly to our 401(k). Keep reading »

The 15 Most Shocking Moments Of 2008

2008 is almost history, and it definitely made some. We saw plenty of highs — the election of the first African-American President — and lows — the stock market dip — but as we look back at a year of extremes, our jaw still drops at these unbelievably shocking moments…

Playboy Hits Wall Street Harder Than The Recession

Playboy is looking for the lovely ladies of Wall Street! The mag has already hit up the hotties at the Olive Garden and Home Depot, but now they want women who aren’t even making minimum wage thanks to the economic crisis. While the market is down, Playboy thinks they can get financial analysts to take it all off! So, if you went to business school, now is you chance to really cash in, sorta. Photo editor Gary Cole claims the payola will be based on the number of applicants, but he doesn’t suspect he’ll have to offer more than 2G’s because, “The reason they [the models] do this is because they want the attention, the opportunity, the experience of doing it. It’s not really for the money.” Ha, we think they underestimate the shrewd negotiators they’re dealing with here. [Reuters UK]
