Frisky Q&A: Kate Monro, Author Of “The First Time: True Tales Of Virginity Lost & Found”

When a friend introduced me to the author Kate Monro over email, explaining she’d just published a book filled with virginity loss stories, I knew that I would love it, sight unseen. The First Time: True Tales Of Virginity Lost And Found (Including My Own) totally delivered! Monro, who used to work for the band Blur and for Dazed and Confused magazine, began collecting stories on a blog called The Virginity Project. For her first book, Monro collated vignettes from Brits and Americans, from grandpas to high school girls, who all reminisced about their first time with fondness, earnestness and occasional heartbreak. It may have been a long time since any of us has been a virgin, but if the bare humanity on display in The First Time is any indication, we could do well to revisit it.

Kate Monro lives in the UK, so we had to conduct our interview over email — but I’d like to imagine we chatted over cups of Earl Grey and some Tim Tams while staring off into the London fog. Our Q&A, which was edited for length and clarity, begins after the jump. Keep reading »

Monogamous Sex Is Best For Society, Says Conservative Dude

With so many points of clarifications that we could use from social conservatives — Single motherhood is bad! But so is abortion! — one would think The New York Times‘ conservative columnist, Ross Douthat, would have plenty of rich, complicated topics to dig into. But in an op-ed column that ran yesterday, Douhat argued in defense of monogamy, praising social conservatives for their “optimistic” attitudes about love and happiness, and even went so far as to cheer on abstinence-only education sex ed programs that delay sexual behavior in teenagers. Dealbreaker: He’s Saving Himself For Marriage

I sat at the airport, waiting to board Virgin Airlines flight 451 traveling non-stop to my sunny destination … to a friend’s wedding. I exhaled. It had been too long since I had been on a real vacation. All my vacation days seem to be designated to other people’s weddings. In the terminal, I replayed the fantasy I’ve always had that one lucky time in my life I would end up seated next to a hot man on a plane, all the planets would align, and we would join the illustrious Mile-High Club. Maybe I could even take him as my wedding date. Keep reading »

Ohhhh. Hmm. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: China’s “Fake Virgins” Are On The Rise

  • The lengths women will go through to seem “pure”: an increasing number of sexually active young Chinese women are getting a surgical “hymen restoration” so they appear to be virgins on their wedding night. A “hymen restoration” costs about $700 and involves a half hour of surgery. [Washington Post]
  • Miss Universe contestants caused a stir posing topless in body paint in promotions for the pageant. Because, you know, beauty pageants aren’t supposed to be about people’s bodies or anything. [Huffington Post]
  • Health experts say low-income immigrant women are using the abortion pill RU-486 illicitly, because they can purchase the pills for as little as $20 off the street when they cannot afford a doctor’s visit to have them prescribed. According to the February 2010 of the journal Contraception, the median cost for a first-trimester abortion is $430. [ABC News]

Jenny Loses Her Virginity On “Gossip Girl” And, Of Course, It’s A Disaster

There I was, minding my own business on Monday night, when I noticed “Jenny Humphrey” from “Gossip Girl” became a trending topic on Twitter, i.e., something everyone is tweeting about. Jenny Humphrey, of course, is the precocious 16-year-old budding fashion designer from Brooklyn, played by Taylor Momsen. With her older brother, Dan, young Jenny attends a fancy Upper East Side prep school; she just wants to be accepted by the rich kids, who dismiss her as a social climber. I clicked on the trending topic and saw hundreds of tweets saying things like, “Jenny Humphrey is a ho!” and “I hate Jenny Humphrey, she’s such a skank!”

Clearly, this involved further investigation. Keep reading »

10 Suggestions For Renaming The Hymen

In some cultures, the word “hymen” could use a little re-branding — so the Swedish Association for Sexual Education is renaming it! The Nordic org is publishing literature in English, Arabic and Sorani Kurdish that refers to that little piece of tissue as the “vaginal crown” or “vaginal corona” and provides diagrams and info explaining that not having a hymen when one first has sex doesn’t mean one is not a virgin. The group hopes that more education on the hymen — er, the “vaginal crown” — will have an effect on the number of so-called “honor killings,” when male members of a family murder a woman who has had sex out of wedlock or even associated with a man who is not socially approved by her culture.

The Frisky is pretty happy to live in a place where having a hymen on our wedding night is not a life or death situation. But we couldn’t help but get the ol’ wheels turning when it comes to renaming the hymen. After the jump, some suggestions that were probably rejected … Keep reading »

VH1′s “The New Virginity”: Yet Another Documentary About Virgins

Virginity documentaries: they’re hot right now. A few weeks ago we reported on an upcoming documentary, “How To Lose Your Virginity,” by filmmaker Therese Shechter. But tonight at 11p.m. (EST), VH1 joins in with an episode called “The New Virginity” for VH1 News. The program focuses mostly on the virgins of pop culture — the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Donna Martin on 90210, etc. — and the hypocrisy of their at-times-sexual public persona with their alleged chastity vows. It will also explain creepy practices like abstinence pledges and purity balls to those of us lucky enough not to get roped into them. Plus, Jessica Valenti, author of The Purity Myth: How America’s Obsession With Virginity Is Hurting Young Women and one of the co-founders of Feministing, will be featured as an expert — that’s reason enough to watch! “How To Lose Your Virginity,” The Documentary

Oooh, cool: filmmaker Therese Shechter is making a documentary about all things virginal, aptly called “How To Lose Your Virginity.” Shechter posted a trailer online and it looks like “How To Lose Your Virginity” covers virginity pledges, the purity ring iPhone app, those creepy “purity balls,” and even Miley Cyrus’ alleged abstinence pledge. Please tell us Kevin Jonas’ glorious princess wedding / inaugural cherry-popping will be featured prominently, too? Keep reading »

Dads Are Talking To Their Sons About Balls—Purity Balls, That Is

I’d thought purity balls—dances when tween and teen girls pledge to their fathers that they’ll stay virgins until marriage—were paternalistic and super-creepy for the girls. But, apparently, they are equal-opportunity paternalistic and creepy. The Tennessean interviewed parents Julian and Valerie Head, of Franklin, Tennessee, who are hosting a purity ball at their home for their 9- and 6-year-old sons, where the boys will make a virginity pledge with their dad. Yeah, these poor boys are 9 and 6.
