On July 15th, Mike Massé’s infant son Noah was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. As the family scrambled to find the best care for their son, and the medical bills started piling up, Mike came up with a creative way to raise some extra money: he recorded an acoustic cover of The Beatles’ song “Let It Be” and posted it on YouTube and iTunes, where people could make donations or purchase the song to support Noah’s fight against cancer. Mike’s cover is beautiful and heartbreaking, and while his efforts have been fairly successful so far (the song recently reached #1 on the Netherlands iTunes charts), let’s not forget the underlying tragedy that amidst something as earth-shattering as a child’s cancer diagnosis, a grieving father must ask for donations to help save his son’s life. As Xeni Jardin of Boing Boing pointed out, “Cancer is one tragedy. The way our country treats people with cancer, even when they’re little babies, is another.” [Let It Be For Noah]
During her latest appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Alison Brie confessed to working as a perky birthday clown named Sunny when she was 17 and agreed to show off her balloon animal skills. Let’s just say her erotic balloon pumping technique left most of the audience shifting uncomfortably in their seats. Personally, I’m more turned on by her white tuxedo. Gorgeous! [Buzzfeed]
Caitlin Kelley may seem like a normal 9-year-old with pink hair and a major Justin Bieber obsession, but she’s actually a formidable force in the Mixed Martial Arts world, ranked 13th in the United States in submission grappling. And if that’s not enough to impress you, get this: her nickname is “Meathook.” Check out her training regimen in this surprisingly adorable interview–I especially love the way she giggles while describing the joys of beating boys in the ring. Rock on, Caitlin. Someday I’d like to shake your hand, although I’m not sure my hand would survive the encounter. [Youtube via The Mary Sue]
They tried to make her go to rehab … and she said no, no, no, the glitter glue hearts on my ukelele are not dry yet! [Flavorwire]
Not that I wanted Sen. Rick Santorum to continue his presidential campaign of caveman asshattery. But it doesn’t seem fair that he should get to just, you know, choose that choice for himself while women around the country are forced to wait up to 72 hours to make a decision about their own freakin’ uterus. Ashley Judd, Michelle Trachtenberg, and a couple other ladies have the best idea on how to fix this injustice: Rick Santorum should have a 72-day waiting period — and a healthy dose of “non-judgmental” lecturing — before he can abort his campaign. Rick, are you sure this is the right decision? Are you suuuure? [Funny Or Die]
L’enfer c’est les autres. Hell is other people. And other cats. No one knows this more than Henri, the existential French cat. He’s black and white, of course. And no one, no one, knows his torment. [The FW]
The film experience I’ve been longing for is here! “American Juggalo” is Sean Dunne’s short documentary filmed at this year’s Gathering of the Juggalos. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around this misunderstood subculture. I know they paint their faces, drink Faygo, listen to “horror rap,” and are “down with the clown until dead in the ground.” But what does that mean exactly?
Yee haw! It’s a new “Muppets” spoof trailer. This time Fozzie Bear, the Swedish Chef, Jason Segel and crew have created “The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo,” their take on “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” This should start your Friday lunch hour off on the right note. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »
Jeff Tweedy of Wilco is mourning the fact that the Black Eyed Peas retired their classic “My Humps.” At a book party this week, Jeff took the stage and did a dramatic reading of the song. Wow, I didn’t think the lyrics could sound any more inane, but they really can. Do I smell a collaboration coming on? [Huffington Post] Keep reading »
