This is Ronan, a three-year old sea lion living at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and she loves to dance. She first bobbed her head to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Down On The Corner,” and since then has rocked out to songs by the Backstreet Boys and Earth, Wind & Fire. Aside from being adorable, Ronan’s dance moves are actually kind of a big deal from a scientific perspective: researchers previously believed that animals could only keep a rhythm if they were able to mimic the sound vocally (which is why certain birds can “dance” to pop songs). “It may be that rhythmic ability is more widespread in the animal kingdom than previously thought,” says Peter Cook, one of the researchers who has been working with Ronan.
