And The Victoria’s Secret “Sexiest Curves” Award Exists Why?

I try to restrain myself from straying too far down the rabbit hole of the vaguely dehumanizing, inherently anti-feminist fuckery that is Victoria’s Secret, but that was before I knew they gave out a “Sexiest Curves” trophy. Sure, if they simply must do it, I’m glad they decided to give it to Shakira, a wildly talented dancer, philanthropist, and MENSA genius who also happens to be beautiful… But why? Where, exactly, does a Victoria’s Secret “Sexiest Curves” award fit into the world? Riddle me that. [Huffington Post]

kylie bisutti god inspired clothing

It’s terrible. We were so pulling for Kylie Bisutti, the former winged-underwear model. After all, Victoria’s Secret models are usually only known for doing one of two things: losing all their baby weight in two weeks or dating Adam Levine. Bisutti, on the (wayyy) other hand, left the coveted model position last year because it was clashing with her Christian values. She moved with her husband to Montana where she wrote her memoir, I’m No Angel: From Victoria’s Secret Model To Role Model, and began her new clothing line, God inspired fashion. (Yes, the “i” and the “f” are not capitalized, for some reason.) Keep reading »

Models: they’re the editorial picture of loveliness and good breeding and long legs and dagger-like cheekbones, and, well, many of them smoke like chimneys. This is not to say that all models are smokers, or that all smokers are models for that matter (no, what?), but you’d be hard-pressed to come up with a well-publicized fashion model who hasn’t been photographed with a cigarette in hand at one point or another. At some glamorous fête? Yep. Outside of a show? Of course. Backstage? Oh, definitely. It’s kind of ironic that, out of the entire industry, Victoria’s Secret models are the ones who are generally encouraged to maintain a squeaky-clean, wholesome, “just us girls havin’ some fun in tacky lingerie and a huge fucking set of wings” image (like, good role models or something?). But, you know, if you’re not that girl, you’re just not that girl, and I guess Leonardo DiCaprio ex Erin Heatherton just is not that girl. In fact, she was photographed puffing on a cigarette just moments before walking into one of the chain’s NYC stores for an event, and made no attempts to toss it or cover it up. Nah, she just shot the paps a look, put it out when she was finished, and strolled on in there. Smoking isn’t Good For You, but honestly, I weirdly kind of enjoy that Erin was so nonchalant about the whole thing. You do you, Erin Heatherton, you do you. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

The Frisky Guide To Celebrity Modelizers

frisky guide to celebrity modelizersThis week, the world lost a prolific and brave modelizer, when Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine proposed to (what else?) model Behati Prinsloo. There are practically zero photos of them together, and I’m pretty sure this is just some crazy rebound marriage from his relationship with (yup) model Anne V. (who yes, walks the runway with Behati during the Victoria’s Secret annual fashion show), but that’s just a theory.

Modelizers come in a variety of configurations. There’s actor modelizers (Leo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Zach Braff, and currently, Jake Gyllenhaal); musician modelizers like John Legend and Mick Jagger; and even the errant female modelizer (Kelly Osbourne). We thought Levine might be the most prolific of the bunch, but a quick assessment of his fellow model lovers proved otherwise. Leo DiCaprio is the unchallenged King Of Dating Pretty Ladies. He’s dated everyone, including just about every model in George Michael’s “Too Funky” video. His latest is a 20-year-old model named Toni Garrn. He’s 38. Keep reading »

about-face

This weekend in San Francisco, the organization About-Face hosted a protest where participants shed their clothing in front of Victoria’s Secret as a statement against the company’s exclusive use of unrealistic body images. In just bras and underwear, the protesters bared their real human bodies proudly to the world while holding signs with phrases like “I pledge to love my body.”

About-Face is a San Francisco-based organization that works to “equip women and girls with tools to understand and resist harmful media messages that affect their self-esteem and body image.” This particular demonstration, which was mostly planned over Facebook, sought to inspire women and girls everywhere to be proud of their real bodies and not to be affected by unrealistically flawless body images that Victoria’s Secret sets as the expectation. Victoria’s Secret is not happy with model Kylie Bisutti. Earlier this week, Bisutti, who says she left modeling to focus on her Christianity, says she was harshly treated by the lingerie brand. After winning a VS Angel modeling competition in 2009, Bisutti says she was floored by the way the brand treated women. Now she’s written a novel called I’m No Angel, which chronicles her VS days. On Wednesday, The New York Post ran an excerpt from Angel,  in which Bisutti details how she “felt like a piece of meat.” Keep reading »
