I have been a vegetarian for, oh, most of my life. Yet, only once have I dated another vegetarian. I won’t lie—it was very convenient. When we went out for dinner, we could always split dishes. And I appreciated not getting the verbal poking and prodding as to why I’m a vegetarian and what I’m missing out on, something my meat-eating paramours have all tended to do. (For the record, even if you don’t get it, it’s important to me. It isn’t something I plan on changing.) Still, I wouldn’t say that I’d prefer to date vegetarians. It’s just one of those things that doesn’t rank on my scale of Things That Really Matter.

But that probably isn’t true, however, for people who join the British online dating site, Veggiedates. The homepage shows a woman feeding a dude a slice of a pepper with chopsticks, and it claims to be a place for “single vegetarian men and women looking for love.” But the site is in some hot water. Because while vegetarians were paying the membership fees, the site actually uses a shared database with many other, non veggie-focused sites. Meaning that the majority of potential matches on the site are actually meat eaters.

Natalie Portman A Reformed Vegan

“I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy. If you’re not eating eggs, then you can’t have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that’s all you want to eat. I actually wanted eggs at the beginning and then they grossed me out after awhile … I know there are people who do stay vegan, but I think you have to just be careful.”

Natalie Portman explains why she’s decided to take a vacation from veganism and give dairy products a try during her pregnancy. As a reformed vegan myself, I am in favor of this because, well, cheese is awesome. [PopEater] Keep reading »

PETA Wants To Run Commercial Of Hot Girls Fellating Vegetables During the Super Bowl

You work that carrot, baby! In 2009, PETA was willing to pay millions to run a commercial during the Super Bowl of scantily clad women making out with vegetables. The networks declined to air “Veggie Love” — think of the children! — but now PETA is trying again with an “outtakes” video. Once again they’ve upset the delicate balance between animal rights/objectifying women. But when it comes to PETA, what else is new? Hey, how many meateaters became vegans or vegetarians because a bikini model fellated a stick of celery? [BuzzFeed] Keep reading »

Tasting Tofu At The Altar — Should Vegans Serve Meat At Their Weddings?

To meat or not to meat – it’s a question that vegans and vegetarians getting married have to consider when planning their weddings. And it’s a debate that was recently reignited by vegan Chelsea Clinton’s marriage to Marc Mezvinsky.

Chelsea – who is also allergic to gluten (ouch!) – had a mostly vegan wedding, but provided beef for her meat-grazing guests. But some vegans and veggies say that they shouldn’t have to cater to carnivores on their special day. Keep reading »

Quotable: Nic Cage Is A Sexatarian

“I have a fascination with fish, birds, whales—sentient life—insects, reptiles. I actually choose the way I eat according to the way animals have sex. I think fish are very dignified with sex. So are birds. But pigs, not so much. So I don’t eat pig meat or things like that. I eat fish and fowl.”

—Nic Cage explains to The Sun how he chooses which animals he can eat and which he can’t. Ooookay. [NY Post] Keep reading »

A Vegan Strip Club?

I am a recovered vegan. I gave up all animal by-products for four years in high school, so while I’ve since been converted back to the way of cheese, I do empathize with people who are disciplined enough to keep with it. Case in point, Johnny Diablo, who’s been a vegan for 23 years and opened a vegan restaurant in Portland, Oregon, called Casa Diablo. And, uh, it’s a strip club with a “From Dusk Til Dawn” theme. “Please do not wear fur, feathers, silk, wool, or leather on stage. Thank you, the Animals,” reads a sign in the dressing room.

Girl Talk: I’ve Become The Woman I’ve Always Hated, The Calorie Counter

I used to hate women on diets. They look at your frosted brownie, then at your waist, then at your cookie again. Women on diets whine, “I can’t eat that…” They poke and prod their bellies and upper arms like displeased factory inspectors. They complain about how “fat” they look seemingly because they want someone to compliment them. Let’s face it: women on “diets” are annoying.

Me? I thought I’d just count calories because I’m trying to lose weight. Keep reading »

“Save The Whales” PETA Billboard Tells Women “Lose The Blubber: Go Vegetarian”

A PETA billboard in Jacksonville, FL, calls larger women “whales” and urges them to “lose the blubber” by going vegetarian.

PETA’s press release on the billboard says “going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep [women] from looking good in a bikini.” Oh, God, now even billboards are judging us?

Insults and fat-shaming aren’t tried-and-true ways to encourage tofu instead of burgers. But something tells us that wasn’t the point: Bigger women were the ones chosen to be dehumanized so this cruel, sexist billboard could get some chuckles. Gross. [via Feministing] Keep reading »
