Last month, a blogger named Jordan Younger announced in a blog post that she had eaten some fish. This wouldn’t have been noteworthy, except the blog was called The Blonde Vegan and Younger’s post was titled “Why I’m Transitioning Away From Veganism.

Younger used to be a vegan for both health and ethical reasons. As she explained in her post, she felt “nourished and fueled” by her plant-based diet and she was satisfied in her commitment to being cruelty-free. (She also, it should be noted, called herself “addicted to juice cleanses.”)

For awhile, her healthful living seemed to be going well. But then, all of a sudden, her body changed. Younger explained that she no longer felt filled up after she ate, and began to have stomach aches and “wild and ravenous sugar cravings.” She also felt like she could no longer focus. Yet, she writes, “I spent the next several months ignoring my body’s internal cues. … [M]y body didn’t feel GOOD & I wasn’t listening to it.” Keep reading »

The Soapbox: Why I’m Not Going To Stop Eating Meat

The Soapbox: Why I Won't Stop Eating Meat

When I was 13, my 7th grade science class was assigned to dissect a fetal pig.  This made me massively uncomfortable. My teacher told us that we could opt out of doing the dissection and use approved online resources for the project instead if we wrote a convincing essay as to why we didn’t want to do it. I wrote about the fact that human fetuses are used for scientific research, but only with the parents’ consent, and you couldn’t obtain consent from a pig; and besides, we weren’t talking about important scientific research, we were talking about a classroom of seventh-graders (read: little barbarians) who had other resources with which to learn the lesson.

I was able to do the online project. The next philosophical step, in my thirteen-year-old mind, was to say that if I was going to give an animal the same dignity as a human being in this respect, I had to apply it in terms of my food, too. So I stopped eating meat on the basis that I didn’t want anything to die in order for me to live.

That lasted seven years.

The Hardest Thing About Giving Up Meat Is Other People's Opinions

My boyfriend and I decided to give up eating meat about a year ago, shortly after we moved to Nashville. We’re pescetarians, so we’re not completely vegetarian, but I’d say we eat a completely meat-free diet about 90 percent of the time. From an outsider’s perspective, our choice makes very little sense. While we lived in Portland, which is a veritable wonderland for vegetarian and vegans (there were three vegan grocery stores, two raw vegan restaurants, and five vegetarian restaurants within walking distance of my house), we happily feasted on brisket, carne asada, pulled pork, chicken, and turkey fairly often. Then, upon moving to the southern U.S., a region known for its mastery of meats, we decided to give it up.

Even living in Tennessee, switching over to a vegetarian diet hasn’t been that difficult. It’s actually been really fun hunting down meatless options at country diners and trendy new restaurants. The hardest thing about this lifestyle change hasn’t been food-related at all, it’s been explaining it to people, and figuring out how to deal with their reactions. Keep reading »

“It is unacceptable that animals continue to suffer around the world, including the United States of America, for the sake of beauty. I appeal to the USA to follow the European Union’s lead and end animal testing for cosmetics.”

– Peter Dinklagel, aka Tyrion Lannister, spoke out in support of ending the testing of cosmetics on animals. Dink, who’s been a vegetarian since he was 16, teamed up with Cruelty Free International to help support the measure. The ban is already in place in the European Union, and Dinklage, along with fellow CFI spokespeople Ricky Gervais and Joss Stone, are hoping to get a similiar bill passed in the United States. “Reports that the Staples Center will not be 100% vegetarian on March 1st are playfully untrue. Contractually, all McDonalds vendors shall be closed down, and the only thing burning shall be my heart.”

Morrissey, who loves ruining it for others, is demanding that Los Angeles’ Staples Center venue be meat-free for his March concert. You know, the more we ignore him, the closer he gets … to being a perpetually bratty teen hoping to piss off his conservative parents. Shine on you crazy vegetarian diamond. [BlackBook]

If you watched the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night, you probably saw Bill Clinton’s stirring speech. But while the former president still has the same unfettered charisma, quick wit and charm he possessed while in the Oval Office, you might have spotted that there was something was different about him. There was noticeably less of him.

Bill Clinton may be the only former president who is also currently vegan. Ever.

Bill used to be the guy you could count on to stop off at a McDonald’s mid-run. But ever since he was taken down by not one, but two heart surgeries, Clinton has nixed the fries.

Courtney Stodden Shills For PETA, Makes Us Feel Weird About Animal Rights

Look, there’s no doubt I support animal rights. I’m a vegan. I don’t wear fur and only wear vintage leather. However, I feel very strange about animal rights organization PETA using Courtney Stodden as their spokeslady. I mean, it’s great that Courtney adopted her dog Bazaar from a shelter eight years ago, and “saturates” him with love. And also great that she claims she’s never eaten a hamburger and has recently become a vegetarian. But uh, is the lucite heels wearing, 17-year-old child bride really the best spokesperson for animals? Was Jason Lee or Alicia Silverstone busy that day?

15 Vows For Dating A Vegetarian (And 8 Promises Vegetarians Should Make To You)

I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. It’s something that is just as me as being blonde or Italian or snorting when I laugh. Really, really fortunately, my boyfriend is really supportive about it. He loves vegetarian food — he doesn’t even bring meat into our apartment. (I tell him he can!) He eats it when he is out, which gives him a nice balance. But there have definitely been people in my life who gave me a hard time, tried to change me, or tried to make me feel bad. None of those things were good ideas because I never caved. I never ate the “just one!” chicken wing. I just got … annoyed.

Food is love. It’s life — it’s so important. It can take over your relationship if you’re butting heads about your eating habits with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Don’t let it! Think about these rules. They are mine — not everyone’s. If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend who doesn’t eat meat (or gluten, or orange-colored foods, or whatever), talk about it. Figure it out. Then it will never be an awkward thing or cause resentment or passive aggressiveness. Then you can dig in. Yes! Nommmnomnomnomnom… Keep reading »

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ ad campaigns are usually an 11 on the eyeroll scale, only a point behind Axe Body Spray. Their latest ad features a woman whose body is all covered up for once, but she’s wearing a neck brace because her little boyfriend from “Portlandia” “went vegan and knocked the bottom out of” her. And we get a solid eight seconds of the camera lingering on her derriere.

While I don’t doubt that lying on your couch all day eating wings doesn’t make for good lovemaking, this PETA ad perhaps overstates the benefits of boning a vegan. Personally, every meat/dairy-abstaining dude I’ve ever boned was pale, sickly-looking and evangelical about getting me to eat raw cacao. Sexy? Not a chance. While I’m sure there are plenty of vegan/vegetarian dudes who are, heh, animals in the sack, methinks this body brace nonsense is just a tad wishful thinking. [YouTube via Yahoo]
