Look, there’s no doubt I support animal rights. I’m a vegan. I don’t wear fur and only wear vintage leather. However, I feel very strange about animal rights organization PETA using Courtney Stodden as their spokeslady. I mean, it’s great that Courtney adopted her dog Bazaar from a shelter eight years ago, and “saturates” him with love. And also great that she claims she’s never eaten a hamburger and has recently become a vegetarian. But uh, is the lucite heels wearing, 17-year-old child bride really the best spokesperson for animals? Was Jason Lee or Alicia Silverstone busy that day?

I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. It’s something that is just as me as being blonde or Italian or snorting when I laugh. Really, really fortunately, my boyfriend is really supportive about it. He loves vegetarian food — he doesn’t even bring meat into our apartment. (I tell him he can!) He eats it when he is out, which gives him a nice balance. But there have definitely been people in my life who gave me a hard time, tried to change me, or tried to make me feel bad. None of those things were good ideas because I never caved. I never ate the “just one!” chicken wing. I just got … annoyed.

Food is love. It’s life — it’s so important. It can take over your relationship if you’re butting heads about your eating habits with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Don’t let it! Think about these rules. They are mine — not everyone’s. If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend who doesn’t eat meat (or gluten, or orange-colored foods, or whatever), talk about it. Figure it out. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ ad campaigns are usually an 11 on the eyeroll scale, only a point behind Axe Body Spray. Their latest ad features a woman whose body is all covered up for once, but she’s wearing a neck brace because her little boyfriend from “Portlandia” “went vegan and knocked the bottom out of” her. And we get a solid eight seconds of the camera lingering on her derriere. 

While I don’t doubt that lying on your couch all day eating wings doesn’t make for good lovemaking, this PETA ad perhaps overstates the benefits of boning a vegan. Personally, every meat/dairy-abstaining dude I’ve ever boned was pale, sickly-looking and evangelical about getting me to eat raw cacao. Sexy? Not a chance. While I’m sure there are plenty of vegan/vegetarian dudes who are, heh, animals in the sack, methinks this body brace nonsense is just a tad wishful thinking. [YouTube via Yahoo]

I have been a vegetarian for, oh, most of my life. Yet, only once have I dated another vegetarian. I won’t lie—it was very convenient. When we went out for dinner, we could always split dishes. And I appreciated not getting the verbal poking and prodding as to why I’m a vegetarian and what I’m missing out on, something my meat-eating paramours have all tended to do. (For the record, even if you don’t get it, it’s important to me. It isn’t something I plan on changing.) Still, I wouldn’t say that I’d prefer to date vegetarians. It’s just one of those things that doesn’t rank on my scale of Things That Really Matter.

But that probably isn’t true, however, for people who join the British online dating site, Veggiedates. The homepage shows a woman feeding a dude a slice of a pepper with chopsticks, and it claims to be a place for “single vegetarian men and women looking for love.” But the site is in some hot water. Because while vegetarians were paying the membership fees, the site actually uses a shared database with many other, non veggie-focused sites. Meaning that the majority of potential matches on the site are actually meat eaters.

“I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy. If you’re not eating eggs, then you can’t have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that’s all you want to eat. I actually wanted eggs at the beginning and then they grossed me out after awhile … I know there are people who do stay vegan, but I think you have to just be careful.”
