Dater X: I’m In Relationship Limbo

Yesterday evening, I met The Young One outside my office with no idea of where we were going or what we were doing to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I’d pressed him for clues all week and the most he would give me was, “You’ll really like it,” and “If you wear heels, nothing too high.” We began walking, zigging and zagging down the unseasonably warm New York City streets. Every time I thought I had an idea of where we were headed, he’d laugh at my guess, shake his head ‘no,’ and make an abrupt turn. Finally he said, “This is it,” motioning toward an awning with the words “Ballroom Dancing” printed on it. Keep reading »

How Valentine’s Day Is Celebrated Around The World

You know the drill in America; when you’re little, you hand out perforated cards and hope your crush gives you one of the good ones instead of the obvious “just friends” version. And as adults, the pressure is on to have a special date night and be showered with gifts, or be forced to acknowledge that you are completely and utterly alone in the world. But, just like any other holiday, every country has its own way of celebrating. (Or not celebrating—Valentine’s Day is banned in many countries because of its evil consumerist Western roots.) Here are a few other traditions that might be fun to try. Keep reading »

Make Your Lady A Clap-Off Bra For Valentine’s Day

Clap on! Clap off! Clap on, clap off … your girl’s bra. Imagine I was singing that. The Clap-Off Bra is a brilliant gift idea for lazy men who don’t want to put in all that extra work to undo a bra. You can make one for the special lady in your life this Valentine’s Day by following these ridiculously complicated instructions. Oh, and you may want to consider ditching that giant red bow. Most women prefer for their boobs not to look like a Christmas gift. (FYI, the video is sort of NSFW.) [Instructables] Keep reading »

Valentine’s Day Must Be Hell For The Polyamorous

It’s hard enough scrambling to find Valentine’s Day gifts (especially if you’re a cheap and lazy lover), booking reservations for a prix fixe dinner, and trying to make the night as special at St. Hallmark has deemed it to be. But imagine if you had to do that with multiple people. I will complain no more, the polyamorous have it much worse on Valentine’s Day. I actually felt bad for some of the polyamorous couples featured in an article entitled “How to Handle Valentine’s Day When You’re Polyamorous.” Keep reading »

What Do You Want For Valentine’s Day?

Attention ladies and gentlemen of The Friskyverse! Instead of us just telling you what to get for the significant other in your life this Valentine’s Day, I had an idea. Why don’t you tell us what you would like from your boyfriend/ girlfriend/ lover/ spouse/ FWB/ whatever? What would make you as insanely excited as the chick to the left? Surely some of the things you want will appeal to others as possible gifts for themselves or for their boos. And singles, I want to hear from you too! {encode=”amelia@thefrisky.com” title=”Email me”} a link to what you’re hoping to get — or a link to something similar/description of what you want — by tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST and I’ll put together a slideshow of great V-Day gifts selected by Frisky readers. I’ll start. I would like a Dyson vacuum. Lucca is counting her change right now. Keep reading »

Infographic: This Is How We Rank The Gifts Guys Give On Valentine’s Day

Fellas! Valentine’s Day is less than a week away — how ya holdin’ up? Have you figured out what to get your special lady (if you have one, that is)? No? Hmm. Not to put to even more pressure on you, but seriously, you really don’t want to f**k this up. Valentine’s Day is the most important day ever created for anyone with a vagina*** and you do want to get laid again, right? Don’t worry — we’re all basically single, so we can pretend to be your hypothetical girlfriend for a hot second and advise you as to where on the “expensive vs. cheap”/”romantic vs. lame” scale the V-Day gifts you might be considering fall. We don’t want you to get dumped because you thoughtlessly gave her a weedwacker or a boob job consultation.

[Note to any future boyfriends of mine: I would actually love a Dyson. But I am a clean freak and not your average chick.]

How To Avoid Having An Awful Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a minefield. Whether you’re single or hooked-up the potential for misery is high because, much like New Year’s Eve, it rarely lives up to its reputation.

20 Valentine’s Day Gifts It Would Suck To Receive

From anxiety over one’s relationship status (or lack thereof), to figuring out a non-lame way to celebrate, Valentine’s Day, more than any other occasion, has the power to elicit panic in even the most reserved, well-tempered individuals. Perhaps the most nerve-wracking experience of the whole occasion is choosing an appropriate gift, one that sends just the right message without inadvertently offending anyone in the process. Worse than the stress in choosing a perfect gift, though, is the disappointment in receiving one that totally sucks. After the jump, 20 Valentine’s Day gifts we hope you don’t get stuck with this year. Keep reading »

A Sensual Valentine’s Day Dinner For Two

Last year, for my first Valentine’s Day with a new boyfriend, I gave him a carefully prepared box with five smaller wrapped presents inside, each labeled with one of the five senses.

For sight, a DVD of a movie we’d spoken about wanting to watch together. For hearing, a mix CD of songs I loved and wanted him to know. For smell, a bottle of the cologne he liked, and on which he was running low. For taste and touch, a jar of chocolate sauce and a paintbrush to apply it. Our relationship was new and exciting, and the presents ranged from the almost thoughtless to plans for naughty fun together. Keep reading »
