Squee! Rumor has it “Saturday Night Live” has added a female cast member named Kate McKinnon and she is someone we already know and love around these parts! Kate starred in “Vag Magazine,” the kickass webseries that spoofed women who work at a feminist magazine, as the flaky girl Bethanny. Comedic Kate hails from the Upright Citizens Brigade, appeared on LOGO’s “The Big Gay Sketch Show” and has a movie coming out called “Hannah Has A Ho-Phase,” which sounds right up our alley. Deadline Hollywood reports that “SNL” head honcho Lorne Micheals has been auditioning several ladies for the show and Kate will debut next Saturday in the episode hosted by Sofia Vergara. The Mary Sue tells us that Kate is the first out lesbian to ever appear on the show and she’ll be the first openly gay cast member in 27 years. Mazel tov, Kate McKinnon — we’re a fan already. [Deadline HollywoodIMDBVag MagazineThe Mary Sue]

That’s Not Feminist!

It may be awhile before the Internet graces us with new webisodes “Vag Magazine,” about a cabal of feminist hipsters who buy fashion magazine Gemma with proceeds from their Etsy shop and replace it with uber-P.C. mag Vag. The girls — I mean, women — I mean, womyn — are currently filming season two. But fear not, there are still feminists who will tell you how to think: Vag‘s chief scold, Fennel, is sharing her views with the world in a new vlog called “That’s Not Feminist.” You’ll have to watch to find out what’s not feminist this week. Also, it’s sad, but I own that exact same hairband Fennel is wearing. [YouTube] Keep reading »

Frisky Q&A: The Comediennes Behind The Web Series “Vag Magazine”

Even those of us who proudly call ourselves feminists can admit that sometimes other feminists can be a wee bit extreme. That’s why “Vag Magazine,” a new webisode series about a cabal of young feminist hipsters who buy out fashion magazine Gemma with proceeds of their Etsy shop and replace it with uber-P.C. mag Vag, had me peeing my pants laughing. (Pants, of course, being what I wear, as skirts and dresses are tools of the patriarchy.) Staff members Sylvie, Fennell, Bethany, Heavy Flo, and Reba have big dreams for Vag, but Meghan, the lone holdover from Gemma, is increasingly terrified at how little sense these ladies make.

I watched five episodes of “Vag Magazine” — you can watch a couple more after the jump — and I knew I just had to talk to its creators, Upright Citizens Brigade alums/comediennes Caitlin Tegart and Leila Cohan-Miccio. After the jump, read my chat with Caitlin and Leila about third-wave feminists, their hilarious cast of improv stars-to-be, the MarieClaire.com piece about “fatties,” and what it’s like for ladies in comedy. Oh, I’m sorry, womyn in comedy. Keep reading »

“These Skirts Need To Be More Feminist!”: Vag Magazine Webisodes Spoof Feminist Mags

Because all patriarchal structures must fall, fashion magazine Gemma is gone! In its place is Vag Magazine, a feminist rag purchased by Fennel, Sylvie, Bethany, Heavy Flo (a roller derby legend), and Reba (a gonzo feminist pop-culture journalist) with the proceeds from the reusable menstrual pads they sell on their Etsy shop. Will Meghan, the sole holdover from Gemma, survive their stern rebukes and wayward logic?

This parody is good, but my favorite “Vag Magazine” skit — Meghan’s new co-workers teach her a lesson about “feminist skirts” — is after the jump … Keep reading »
