Unexpected Style Inspiration: Wendy Peffercorn From “The Sandlot”

In the history of film, there have been some sexy female characters — Catwoman, Cleopatra, Annie Hall, Princess Leia, Catherine Tramell, just to name a few — but really, none can compare to Wendy Peffercorn from “The Sandlot.” Played by Marley Shelton, Wendy is a lifeguard at the community pool and the obsession of the pre-teen baseball team. Sitting up in her lifeguard tower in a red swimsuit and white cat-eye sunglasses … oiling … lotioning … oiling … lotioning … she is the epitome of 1960s style. Read on for a modern-day take on her perfect poolside ensemble (and don’t forget sunblock!) Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: Trent Reznor, Circa 1994

I love every incarnation of Trent Reznor–awkward teen Reznor, super angry twenty-something Reznor, slightly bloated Reznor who was really into vests, even tuxedo-wearing Oscar-winning Reznor is OK with me. But I think we can all agree that early ’90s Reznor is really where it’s at. Screaming the lyrics to “Closer” with that Severus Snape haircut? So hot.

After the jump, check out the essential components of an old school Reznor outfit, from ripped up jeans to military jacket. Sex obsession and steely glare optional. Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: Prince William’s Wedding Outfit

Speculation about Kate Middleton’s wedding dress has sent the world into a frenzy. Who will design it? What’s the price tag? Does it look like Diana’s? Will the train be 10 feet or 10,000? Speculating about William’s outfit has proved slightly less exciting. Since he is expected to wear his Royal Air Force uniform, there’s only one question, really: will his jacket be red or blue?

But hey, whatever the color, military jackets are always in style. After the jump, a selection of William-inspired options that would look just as cute with jeans and a tank top as they would at the royal wedding. Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Icon: Young Hillary Rodham Clinton

If I had access to a time machine, I would head straight back to the ’70s and befriend young Hillary Clinton. The girl had it goin’ on: she was (and still is) smart, funny, ambitious, and passionate about women’s rights. The main difference between Hillary then and Hillary now? The amazing hippie wardrobe she abandoned a few decades ago. After the jump, a modern take on Hill’s casual hippie look… Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: “Roseanne”

I went to the University of Hawaii for a semester during my junior year of college. I had a room with an inexplicably king-sized bed and a panoramic view of the ocean. There was a farmer’s market down the street that sold fresh pineapples and papayas. I ate shaved ice for breakfast and sweet bread for dinner and it was generally just as awesome as it sounds. But you know what some of my best Hawaiian memories consist of? Lying in that king-sized bed and watching syndicated episodes of “Roseanne.” Sad but true: I love this show more than I love panoramic views of the Pacific.

I understand if you don’t share my love for the Connor clan, but can we all at least admit that these characters were unsung style heroes of the ’90s? I mean, they looked just like us — sometimes a little worse — and they totally owned it. Click through for a thoroughly modern take on the “Roseanne” look… Keep reading »
