Unlikely Style Icon: Lol From “This is England ’86″

Last week I watched “This is England ’86,” the follow up mini-series to the 2006 film “This is England,” about a crew of non-racist skinhead kids in England in the 1980s. Starring the same group of relative unknown featured in the original film, “This is England ’86″ centers on the story of Lol, a young skinhead girl who’s at a crossroads in her romantic relationship and who must make a difficult family decision. I fell in love with the actress playing Lol–Vicky McClure, and her mod skinhead style. Lol is tomboy-ish without losing her essential femininity, tough as nails but sweet to the core. Be sure to check out the movies–and steal her style after the jump! Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Icon: Ms. Frizzle From “The Magic Schoolbus”

Growing up, The Magic Schoolbus was one of my favorite series of books and TV shows. While my school’s budget was slashed to the point where our class field trips consisted of walking outside and looking for bugs in parking lot mud puddles, Ms. Frizzle was using her magic schoolbus to launch her class into outer space or shrinking it down to the size of a blood cell to explore the human circulatory system. Obviously this lady was an awesome teacher, but she also rocked some sweet personal style. After the jump, a toned-down take on her signature outfit… Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Icon: The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling

Recognize these women? They’re the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, better known as G.L.O.W. — the female counterpart to the WWE. We happen to think they have incredible style — and we’re pretty sure American Apparel agrees. After all, they seem to have built an entire scantily-clad empire by biting G.L.O.W.’s look. If you want to rock a leotard look while pulling a mean double suplex move, we’ve got some stylish options for you after the jump. Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: “Roseanne”

I went to the University of Hawaii for a semester during my junior year of college. I had a room with an inexplicably king-sized bed and a panoramic view of the ocean. There was a farmer’s market down the street that sold fresh pineapples and papayas. I ate shaved ice for breakfast and sweet bread for dinner and it was generally just as awesome as it sounds. But you know what some of my best Hawaiian memories consist of? Lying in that king-sized bed and watching syndicated episodes of “Roseanne.” Sad but true: I love this show more than I love panoramic views of the Pacific.

I understand if you don’t share my love for the Connor clan, but can we all at least admit that these characters were unsung style heroes of the ’90s? I mean, they looked just like us — sometimes a little worse — and they totally owned it. Click through for a thoroughly modern take on the “Roseanne” look… Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Icon: Yoko Ono

Look, she may or may not have broken up The Beatles, but one thing is undeniable: Yoko Ono has amazing personal style. When she and John Lennon were together, Yoko’s style killed it. And even now, she doesn’t seem to leave the house without a totally cool hat and jacket combo. But we really covet young Yoko style. Her sunglasses! Her floppy hats! Her all-black (and all-white) ensembles! After the jump, we give you our take on Yoko’s sleek, one-of-a-kind look. Keep reading »
