Fashion Challenge: One Dress, A Dozen Different Ways

I hope you like the dress I’m wearing in today’s “What Are We Wearing Today” because you’re going to see an awful lot more of it. That’s because, as of today, I’m trying out the Uniform Project. What is the Uniform Project? Started by Sheena Matheiken in 2009, the U.P. is meant to get consumers to reconsider how much they really need and to get creative with what they already have. Sheena wore the same little black dress (she washed it frequently, duh) for 365 days, to show people that they could make do with less. The challenge was to make it look different every day. As she styled herself through the project, she also raised funds for the Akanksha Foundation, a non-profit organization providing education to underprivileged children living in Indian slums. The message was: with sustainability and responsibility, we can have fun with fashion and give back to our communities. Keep reading »

365 Days, One Dress: Catching Up With That Uniform Project Chick

When I found out about Sheena Matheiken’s Uniform Project, I was astounded. She decided to wear the exact same dress for an entire year, mixing in only thrifted or donated accessories, in order to raise money for the Akanksha Foundation for less fortunate children. One dress. 365 days. I can’t wear the same thing twice in a row and this girl was going to do it for a whole year! I wondered how in the world would she creatively find new and different outfits for 365 days based on one dress? But she did it, and did it well. Sheena even edited together a little video to show off her style choices throughout the entire year. I promise, you’ll be more than impressed. With a basic black dress, Sheena invented an entire collection of characters — honoring The King of Pop, certain holidays, and the seasons with her style choices while sticking to that same black dress. This girl not only has more style and creative juices than a ton of people, but more importantly, Sheena raised $74,522 for her efforts, meaning that 207 children now have the chance to go to school! Could You Wear One Dress For The Next 365 Days?

Call it a slightly different sort fashion risk. Sheena Matheiken is a woman on a mission. With the help of clothing designer Eliza Starbuck, Matheiken is wearing a single dress every day for the next year. (Check out what she wore on day 47, above) The endeavor is called “The Uniform Project” and it’s “an exercise in sustainable fashion.” There are seven identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day she reinvents the dress with layers, accessories, et cetera—most of which are vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down. And, I gotta say, she comes up with some pretty ingenious combinations and outfits! Think of it as wearing a daily uniform that doubles as a fund-raising effort for the Akanksha Foundation, a school project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.
