Go Watch Some TV On The Radio

Oh man, there are some good albums coming out today. We’re pretty pumped for the new Crystal Stilts, Paul Simon, and Elbow. But the album that’s got its hooks most deeply in us is TV on the Radio’s Nine Types of Light. On their fourth effort, the Brooklyn band channels their usual funk-tinged experimental rock into songs that seem kinda mushy. On “Will Do,” Tunde Adebimpe croons, “Any time will do, my love/ any time will do, no choice of words will break me from this groove.” Making this the perfect album to play during a sweet makeout session. Only not too loud because we’re not in high school anymore.

Forget Christmas. On this day in history, the glam messiah, David Bowie, was born. Although it isn’t one of those official holidays recognized by the Post Office and the bank, January 8, 1947, was, in fact, a day that literally rocked our world! While we have no confirmation that Bowie danced himself right out of the womb wearing platform pumps and guyliner, the man we’ve come to know and love has influenced many of his fellow artists. Hit songs like “Rebel Rebel,” “Heroes,” and “Fashion” have stood the test of time, just like his good looks. Damn, the dude still looks slick in a suit at 62!     The Southern boys head south, if you know what we mean, for their fourth record. Tracks like “Sex on Fire” and “Crawl” have the band of brothers that made it big as teens talking dirty. Seems like since their “California Waiting” days, their addictions have moved from booze and drugs to women. With the seductively slick guitar work and a beat that feels like heavy breathing, the Kings of Leon have given us another record to scream about.

Sweet Release: What’s In And Out The Week of May 20th 2008

  • Scarlett Johansson is the latest starlet to put a record out. But unlike the over produced bubble gum pop of her predecessors, Anywhere I Lay My Head is a tender collection of Tom Waits covers. You know the girl’s got it going on when David Sitek from TV On the Radio produces it, Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs plays guitar, and David Bowie sings back-up vocals. Her deep voice is perfect match for the thoughtful tracks and she even wrote one original, “Song for Jo”. While you probably weren’t impressed by her “Brass In Pocket” Pretenders’ cover in Lost in Translation, this disc will definitely live up to her hype. [Amazon.com]
