Do you eat lunch at your desk? I used to all the time, and still do occasionally. Sometimes, while answering emails and trying not to get bits of tuna salad all over my keyboard, I’d look down at my tupperware-strewn workspace, and the bag of vending machine peanut m&m’s I was saving for dessert, and be like, “Damn, this is bleak.” And now there’s a Tumblr, Sad Desk Lunch, to document this fine tradition:
Sad Desk Lunch isn’t about how great your lunch is. And it’s not about how crappy your lunch is either. It’s about the fact you eat your lunch at your desk during your lunch break where you could roam free. Step outside. Breathe a little. Americans have a tendency never to take their lunch break and sit around, munch on their sandwich at their desk.
After the jump, check out a few more Sad Desk Lunches, including a creative use for a Keurig machine. So depressing. So familiar. Oh, and you can submit your own SDL photos here. May God have mercy on your cold leftovers. Keep reading »
The Internet has been abuzz lately with Tumblr blogs like I, Too, Am Harvard and I, Too, Am Oxford, which focused on the experiences of students of color amongst the mostly white populations at elite universities. Mostly the signs highlight ignorant remarks based on stereotypes students have been subjected to.
Here’s another Tumblr in the same vein, but with a slightly different take: We Are All UVA. Students of all backgrounds and sexual orientations pose holding signs hashtagged #WeAreAllUVA explaining what they contribute to the big melting pot that is the UVA campus. My absolute favorite is this one: five young men from the UVA swim team holding a sign that reads, “2 of us are gay, the other 3 don’t care.” Keep reading »
Two graduate students at the MIT Media Lab have created a research site that quantifies the emotional content of GIFs, and they hope that one day soon it will enable them to translate Shakespeare into GIF-speak. Travis Rich and Kevin Hu launched GIFGIF on March 3, and it’s a whole lot of fun. It’s so much fun, in fact, that it’s attracted an average 15,000 users per day so far, who are each asked upon visiting the homepage to choose which of two GIFs better expresses a certain emotion. Seattle artist Cheyenne Randall is the mastermind behind my new favorite Tumblr, Shopped Tattoos, where he adorns legendary photos with amazingly realistic body art. My favorite images are the vintage photos (I seriously cannot stop staring at that Marilyn pic), but I must admit, the inked up and hipster-ized version of Will and Kate is pretty fantastic too. [I need them to embrace this as a real-life makeover. -- Amelia] Check out tatted up versions of the royal family, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie and JFK after the jump! Keep reading »
