Trendspotting: 6 Brand-New Beauty Ideas From NYFW

When a designer strays outside the box of beauty stalwarts, it’s a refreshing change, given our steady diet of so-called “trends” — smoky eyes, red lips, dewy skin, and bold brows. These ubiquitous looks are beautiful and striking, but they’re also easy go-tos, which on principle renders them, well, kind of boring. But with each new season comes a fresh crop of innovative makeup looks that we guarantee you’ll see on the red carpet come 2013. Behold, the six top trends we’ve spotted on the catwalk this week…

According To NYFW, Black Is The New Black For Next Summer

Spring and summer fashion is generally pretty predictable insofar as it is, well, summery — think airy, diaphanous fabrics in light, muted colors accented by eye-catching brights, and you’ve just about hit the nail on the head every time. As the S/S 2013 shows crop up, we get a good glimpse at what to expect come next year … and is it just me, or is it all turning out to be a bit darker than usual? That’s not to say that the season’s requisite lightness, comparably more cheerful than that of Autumn/Winter styles, has been sacrificed in favor of deeper, moodier hues; it’s just that all of the whites and pastels are offset by a whole lot of black. I’m the last to complain — black is the predominate color in my wardrobe — so yes, I am unquestionably biased, but I think the contrast serves to make the clothes all the more striking. Are you, like me, thrilled that some of your favorite black pieces might just make the spring/summer cut, or are you all about the whites and brights come June, regardless of what the runway dictates? Must Haves: 10 Badass Boots For Less Than $100

I spent most of the long weekend curled up on my couch with a stack of September fashion magazines and a plate of cranberry orange scones (yes, it was heavenly), and I fell head over heels in love with this season’s crop of boots: they’re studded, strappy, slouchy, and they look seriously sexy with everything from flouncy dresses to ripped-up jeans. What I didn’t fall in love with were all the triple (and quadruple!) digit price tags, so I decided to search for some affordable alternatives. Click through to check out 10 badass boots that won’t break the bank, unless of course you buy all of them, which is what I plan to do…

Celeb Street Style Spotlight: Colored Denim

When stores started filling up with colorful jeans a couple years ago, I was pretty sure it would be a passing trend, but the look has stuck around, and you know what? I’m glad it has. Colored denim opens up so many new outfit possibilities, and can easily be dressed up or down. Looking for some inspiration to try the style for yourself? Can We Talk About Guys In Tank Tops?

Dude Looks: Bold Socks
There's nothing sexier than a well-chosen sock. Read More »

It’s officially September now, which means it’s time to reflect on how we spent the dog days of summer. Did you have a good summer? Did you make boozy popsicles? Did you smile broadly while wearing a sunhat the size of a Mini Cooper? If so, good work! Want to know what I did this summer? I saw a lot of men wearing tank tops and I had complicated feelings about it.

Seriously though, I think 2012 will go down in history as the Summer Of Men’s Tank Tops (SOMTT for short). I mean, men have always worn tank tops, but this year the trend really caught on, and suddenly sleeveless shirts became a totally legitimate clothing option for regular dudes, not just mega hipsters and Nickelback fans… Keep reading »

This photo reminds me of some kind of “Count the trends!” game you might find in a fashion-themed issue of Highlights magazine. I’ve counted nine so far: bralette, geometric necklace, tribal prints, mixed prints, peplum, layers, mini skirt, pencil skirt, sheer fabric. Am I missing any? Also how in the world could you ever wear this in real life? [Sheer Pencil Skirt with Printed Peplum: $37, ASOS]

Awesomely Affordable: 20 Fabulous Blazers For $50 Or Less

Seeing so many celebs rocking blazers has made me go a little blazer-crazy. Seriously: wear it to work with a pencil skirt and heels, wear it on the weekend with jeans and boots, wear it on a date with a lace dress and wedges, and so on and so on. Will You Be Wearing Matching Lips And Nails This Fall?

Chanel Tries Dada

So I guess matching your lipstick to your nail polish is kind of a thing now? A bevy of designers, from Giorgio Armani to Zac Posen, walked coordinating shades down the runway last season, but something about its slightly contrived nature led me to believe it was just one of those things that wouldn’t take in the real world. It strikes me as having a very sophisticated Upper East Side vibe, which just doesn’t work for me. And yet ever-tempting brands like Dior and Chanel are giving their seal of approval by launching “twin sets” of nail lacquer and lipstick intended to be worn together, making the matchy-matchy trend a touch more difficult to resist. Are you into it, or do you think this is a look best worn by ladies who lunch? (Shown L-R: Chanel Le Vernis in Infidèle and Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Infidèle; Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick and Vernis Nail Lacquer in Incognito)

Because sexual identity is practically the same as wearing heels or flats, the fine fashionistas at Style.com have declared that lesbian chic is the next big thing. In an article on the site, writer Maya Singer notes that:

Lesbians! They’re everywhere. This summer, the New York fashion scene was buzzing with gossip about a couple of high-profile ladies who ditched their marriages and started dating women; across the pond, meanwhile, British Vogue ran a whole article on that phenomenon, while society rag Tatler chimed in with a feature on London’s seven “loveliest lesbians.” (Only seven?) Just last week, Models.com posted photos on its homepage of the nuptials of model Harmony Boucher and her bride, Nicole.

Is Whitney Port’s Purple Makeup So Wrong, Or So Wrong It’s Right?

With September on the horizon (dun dun dunnnnn), celebrities are often the first ones to convert their looks from beach-ready basics to the sultrier trappings of fall. Whitney Port isn’t someone I normally look at and think, Celebrity!, mostly because I’m a huge snob, but she does seem sharply attuned to the revolving seasonal trends. Dark eggplant-hued shadows, liners, and lipsticks are all over the radar for autumn, with cool-toned mauve shades rising to popularity as well. The former star of “The City” presented her eponymous clothing line at the Fashion Festival in Sydney (where, it’s worth nothing, it’s high summer), and chose a very purple look for the occasion, complementing a plum lip gloss with a similar shade around her eyes. While there isn’t anything fundamentally wrong with this pairing, I can’t help but feel like it makes the usually radiant Whitney look a bit… under the weather.
