Shopping Guide: 10 Pastel Pieces

I guess I may have been a little too presumptuous in my assertions of spring, because things in New York City have taken a turn for the cold. My (rather wise) father is ascribing it to an “Arctic blast,” which seems reasonable, so I’m going to assume that this is indeed a mere blip on the late-March radar. Given the weather, it may not seem high time for spring clothes, but really, is there ever a bad time for pastels? This year, trend-starters and garden-variety fashionistas alike are getting bold with brights and their diluted counterparts, so I have reason to believe that come early summer, Easter-egg shades will be inescapable. They’re the perfect way to inject some à la mode color into your look without taking the neon route and ease your style into something a little more warm-weather friendly. Behold, my selection of the prettiest pastel clothing and accessories, perfect for sweetening up your wardrobe this time of year.

Dear Monocle Man,

This morning, Jessica sent me a link to the Warby Parker website, alerting me to the fact that for a mere $50 it is possible to buy a prescription monocle. This realization made me unreasonably upset. Maybe it’s because I live in Portland and the implications of thousands of steampunk hipsters trying to balance ironic monocles atop their cheekbones while riding fixed gear bicycles are not only disturbing but dangerous. Or maybe it’s because I think monocles are dumb … Keep reading »

It happens to the best of us: we throw on a hot dress only to realize later there is no way to sit down without flashing everyone in the room, or maybe we’re so excited to wear our favorite sweater that we forget to put on pants. I’ve always had a problem with pants and skirts that come with a belt attached. I feel like these garments represent a significant step toward the downfall of civilization. I mean, if we can’t even choose our own belt and loop it through a few belt holes how will we feed ourselves and solve the global warming crisis? When I saw these shorts with suspenders attached, well, that’s when I knew there was no hope for mankind. [$137, Pink Mascara]

The stripe trend is obviously not going anywhere, since stores are packed with more stripey items than ever. I love stripes in pretty much every incarnation–thick, thin, vertical, horizontal–and I especially love seeing designers having fun with different color combinations. One stripe color combo I’m not quite sure about, though, is black and yellow. It’s visually striking, but no matter how chic the silhouette it always brings to mind the round bumblebee costumes of elementary school plays. What do you guys think? Would you wear black and yellow stripes? [$63, ASOS]

I was browsing a cheese-themed Pinterest page the other day when I happened upon an intriguing trend: the cheeseboard wedding cake. It seems that some brides are opting for an elegant tiered cheese selection in addition to–or in lieu of–a traditional wedding cake. Julie finds this idea completely repulsive, but since my significant other is a cheesemonger, I must say I’m pretty intrigued. Maybe it’s because I know firsthand that there’s nothing more romantic than a big ol’ hunk of brie? [Newport Weddings]

Dear Kate Middleton's Hair
Your constant perfection is kinda depressing. Read More »

Kate Middleton visited London’s Olympic Park today to play hockey with the national teams. In the process, she showed off a pair of super trendy red jeans — and some impressive lunging skills. Also her hair was looking perfectly wavy and frizz-free despite the physical exertion, but that was to be expected. (Oh, and it turns out the Duchess played field hockey in high school — no wonder she looks so adept!)

Would You Wear: Floral Pants?

As anyone who’s flipped through a fashion magazine in the past month will know, florals are really happening right now. The pattern formerly reserved for tapestries and the old pillows at your grandmother’s house has reclaimed its glory and is being worn in all its incarnations. One garment in particular became ubiquitous on the spring/summer runway, and now it’s popping up on fashion editors and celebrities alike. The unexpected rise of the floral pant is inescapable: they’re everywhere, so you may as well embrace it, even (and especially!) if they’re out of your usual comfort zone. Personally, I think they’re an awesome look, particularly when worn with an otherwise neutral, streamlined outfit. What do you think: would you wear them? If you’re looking to get your hands on a pair, check out my picks after the jump. Keep reading »

5 Current Trends Charles Darwin Would Probably Be Into

I think about a lot of things when I get dressed in the morning. I consider the pros and cons of shapewear. I come up with brilliant comebacks that would have been useful 3 years ago. I realize that I kind of miss the Macarena dance. And the other day I found myself thinking, I wonder if Charles Darwin would like my outfit? Instead of psychoanalyzing my need for approval from the father of evolution, I thought I’d make a list of modern day trends that Mr. Darwin might be into. So here we go…
