Anyone who has ever dabbled in granola pursuits can attest to the comfort of Birkenstocks. Yes, they are a pleasure to wear, but what they are not is stylish. It shouldn’t even be a question: unless you align yourself with a crunchier crowd (and there’s nothing wrong with that), Birkenstocks have no place on your feet. I guess what I’m trying to say is that Birkenstocks have no place in fashion … but if Phoebe Philo says otherwise, it’s probably in my best interest to step back. The Céline designer, beloved for her airy, streamlined silhouettes (and to-die-for handbags), designed a Birkenstock-esque flat sandal with a decidedly un-hippie mink lining, priced at €700 (close to $1,000). That’s a lot of cash for a glorified Jesus shoe.
But in a true testament to high fashion’s ripple effect, the latest issue of British Vogue features a pair of classic white Birks, and the same shoe was spotted on the runway of menswear duo Agi & Sam at London Fashion Week. Will we be seeing a resurgence of this particular footwear previously favored by the hackysack set? It’s possible, but I just can’t imagine society tastemakers like Anna Wintour giving them the sign-off. I do, however, peg Kanye West as the next to sport the shoe. Just you watch. [Guardian]
I was feeling really emo over the weekend, so I bought some dark OPI nail polish that I thought would channel the cold darkness of my heart, but when I put it on it turned out to be the PRETTIEST medium brown with mauve undertones, and I was like, “Aww that’s so cute!” Conclusions: I suck at being goth, and brown nail polish is the bomb. Wear these chocolate-y shades now before the warm weather of spring has you reaching for brighter colors. Shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »
I fell in love with the colorful fit and flare coats Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama wore to the presidential inauguration, and now I’m dying to get one of my own to wear for important events in my non-presidential life, such as going grocery shopping. If you want to join the the fit and flare party too, click through for 10 cozy coats in fun, feminine silhouettes…
As someone who confines their wardrobe to the darker side of the spectrum (happily, might I add), I naturally shy away from solid brights or pastels. They clash and look kind of silly against my palette of black, grey, dark green, beige, and white, so I find that my monochromes are best brightened with a heady dose of — you guessed it — florals. Patterns add an unexpected touch to any desaturated ensemble, and florals in deeper shades strike the perfect balance between spring’s paler, more saccharine versions and this season’s all goth, all the time aesthetic. The best part? There’s no reason you should have to wait until April (at least!) to show them off.
What did you think of all the cutout dresses at the Golden Globes this year? Some dresses definitely worked better than others, but in general I loved seeing so many unique silhouettes and unexpected flashes of skin on the red carpet. Whatever your body type and levels of modesty, there are actually a ton of ways to get the cutout look. Want to show off your shoulders? Draw attention to your collarbone? Highlight your back? I found 10 sexy cutout pieces in a variety of styles and colors–click on the gallery to find the perfect one for you!
Asia is kind of notorious for its long-standing monopoly on bizarre “trends,” from bagel heads and tentacle porn to ANIMATRONIC CAT EAR HEADBANDS THAT MOVE WITH YOUR EMOTIONS. Sorry, I am a little stoked on that one (see also: cat cafes). So, as mind-bendingly strange as many of them are (so, so, so strange), I can’t say I’m ever shocked to hear that something new and batshit crazy is going on in Asia. And yet! Young people (I’m 80 years old) in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are getting into fashion braces. Like, for your teeth. Listen, it physically pains me to admit this, but I, too, wanted braces as a child. What the fuck, former self? I thought they were cool! Metal in your mouth! What isn’t cool about that? You read Fifty Shades of Grey on the subway, you sexted your ass off, waxed your bush until it was nonexistent, avoided period sex and hell, you even spent a full half hour looking for the NSFW versions of the Kate Middleton topless photos just because you were bored. It’s OK. No shame. You were en trend for 2012. But that’s all over now. Onward! The Frisky offers their humble predictions for what will be IN and OUT for sex in 2013.
Jessica Alba braved the frantic crowds at Target to do some last minute holiday shopping, and she looked fabulous (as usual!) in a studded leather jacket, star print jeans, a lime green bag, and a royal blue manicure that I want to copy, like, now. The best part about this outfit? Those sharp spikes on her shoulders aren’t just a trendy fashion statement–they’re an effective defense against the crazy shoppers who are prepared to knock you over for the last Cinderella Barbie. If you’re headed to the mall this weekend, take a cue from Jess and wear studs. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
I was going to write about how I really like both of the Kardashian sisters’ outfits, and how pairing colored denim with a black top is a great way to wear it in fall and winter, but then I noticed the caption attached to this photo: “After shopping earlier in the day the sisters went to the famous bridge where one homeless man tried to eat the face off of another homeless man before being killed by police.” And now, well, I have no words.
