  • Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is supporting an anti-abortion bill that is making its way through the state legislature which would require some women seeking first-trimester abortions to have transvaginal ultrasounds, which are performed by inserting a probe into the vagina. The forced transvaginal ultrasounds are medically unnecessary and are a popular ploy of anti-abortion folks to scare women from obtaining abortions . [Think Progress] [UPDATE: Talking Points Memo disputes that the ultrasounds would be transvaginal, instead stating only “ordinary” on-the-belly ultrasounds would be required. — Talking Points Memo]
  • Facebook announced a new policy in which it will stop treating photographs of post-mastectomy scars (usually scars on removed breast tissue) the same as it does pornography. Recently, FB also tightened its regulations on gender-based hate speech. [Think Progress]
  • Apropos of nothing, Austrialian soccer team manager Holger Osieck announced at a press conference that “women should shut up in public.” What? Right! He has since issued a non-apology apology in which he said, convincingly, “It was off the record. It was more of a funny remark. It was nothing against any women or whatever. Definitely just a complete misunderstanding.” [Yahoo] Keep reading »

Indiana Advances Bill Requiring 2 Transvaginal Ultrasounds Before & After Abortion, Then Changes It

Today's Lady News photo
  • Indiana’s state Senate advanced a bill requiring a woman to get two transvaginal ultrasounds before taking the RU-486 abortion pill, one before and one afterwards. Fortunately, today they dropped that language, saying doctors should perform “appropriate testing” on women two weeks after the abortion pill is taken. Which could mean urine testing … or a transvaginal ultrasound. [Slate, San Francisco Gate]

north carolina advances anti-abortion bill

Women would be forced to have invasive, medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasounds two hours before having an abortion if Republicans in Michigan get their way. A male Republican in Michigan’s state House of Representatives introduced a bill earlier this week similar to the one Virginia eventually backed-off of last year after public outcry. Keep reading »

campaign ad
Whoa.

It’s that time of year where you can’t turn on the television without another campaign ad intoning “… and then Barack Obama ate a live baby.” So I think this ad from North Carolina State Senate candidate Deb Butler is amazing for its understated simplicity: she appears onscreen with a transvaginal ultrasound wand, which her opponent State Sen. Thom Goolsby supported women being required to receive prior to an abortion. (It is currently being challenged in court.) “He wouldn’t dare show you this but this is Goolsby’s contribution to women’s health: a medically unnecessary procedure that is now required by state law,” Butler says, as she holds the vaginal proble. “He promised us his first priority would be jobs, but instead he’s following us into the doctor’s office.” It’s intense for a campaign ad, but is so jarring it works. What do you think of the ad? Tell us in the comments!

Idaho’s state senate may vote as early as today on a bill that will force women to get a medically unnecessary ultrasound before terminating an unwanted pregnancy. Anti-abortion activists say forcing a woman to have an ultrasound gives her “more information” before an abortion. Pro-choice activists and doctors say this is just another a tactic to restrict middle- and low-income women’s access to abortion, as the additional cost can be prohibitively expensive for women who already may be struggling to pay to end an unwanted pregnancy.

And guess who would love to jump in and “help” with that financial conundrum? Idaho’s so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” which offer free ultrasounds to women but are staffed by anti-abortion activists — not actual doctors! — who will do everything, including lie to women, to stop them from terminating a pregnancy. Several cities around the country have actually passed legislation to thwart CPCs from misleading women.

So, to recap: Idaho women would be forced by law to have an ultrasound and if they cannot afford that ultrasound, the only place they could get one for free would be from anti-abortion activists.

Let’s have a big round of applause for women’s health care in America, everybody!

Totally Awesome, Totally Crap: The Frisky Week In Review

It was a very bad week for bunnies. Not only did Til, the famous mutant German bunny with no ears, get squished to death this week, but Miss Cooper, a bunny that lived in an NYC boutique, was stolen, too! We also talked about the veritable epidemic plaguing women: migraines. And we discussed the baby geniuses in New Hampshire that are trying to pass a law that would make it okay for doctors to tell women that abortions cause cancer. Which is not true. Mmkay. Tipping the scales for good this week: Well, the finale may have sucked, but we’ll always have “The Bachelor” sketchbook. Pat Robertson, who generally never has anything nice to say, says oral sex is okay (within specific parameters, of course). And the awesome story of the women of Virginia, who were frustrated with Senator Ryan McDougle, an ardent supporter of that state’s transvaginal ultrasound bill. They figured if he cared so much about their vaginas they’d left him know what was going on with them all the time, so they began providing graphic vagina updates on his Facebook wall. Rock on!
