Back in the ’70s, when there was still an East and West Germany, East Germany was very serious about winning international sports competitions, and was known to regularly dope their athletes (see also: East German swim team). Athletes were fed “performance enhancing drugs” (PEDs) — aka anabolic steroids — that bulked them up and made them more competitive. It was the East German athletes and coaches that inspired the Olympics to institute regular drug tests.

Heidi Krieger (pictured above, competing in 1987 as a woman) was a shot putter in East Germany, who won the gold medal at the 1986 European Championships. She was fed PEDs for several years, and says today that they are the reason she opted to get a sex change and live as a man. He now lives as Andreas Krieger. Keep reading »

This past week, a beauty pageant of an entirely different kind took place in Thailand. The Miss International Queen Pageant is a transgender and transsexual beauty pageant where contestants must have been born male in order to participate. Now in its 8th year, the Miss International Queen Pageant aims to increase visibility and acceptance of transgender and transsexual people. Plus, it’s a great excuse to dress up. This year, 21 contestants from 14 countries journeyed to Pattaya, Thailand, to compete. The winner was Kevin Balot from the Philippines, who took home the $10,000 prize and bragging rights.  After the jump, Kevin and some of the other contestants strut their stuff.

Yesterday, Sheena Monnin, Miss Pennsylvania USA 2012, resigned from the Miss USA pageant system, claiming she discovered documents that proved that the Miss USA contest — which aired on June 3 — was actually rigged! Quelle horror! According to Monnin, she quit after a fellow contestant spotted a list that announced the top five contestants before the show actually happened. In a post on her Facebook wall, she relayed the story: 

I witnessed another contestant who said she saw the list of the Top 5 BEFORE THE SHOW EVER STARTED proceed to call out in order who the Top 5 were before they were announced on stage. Apparently the morning of June 3rd she saw a folder lying open to a page that said ‘FINAL SHOW Telecast, June 3, 2012′ and she saw the places for Top 5 already filled in. Thinking she was just seeing a rehearsal fake top 5 from a previous day she walked away, then realized that it had without a doubt been labeled as the Final Show Telecast, June 3rd. After the Top 16 were called and we were standing backstage she hesitantly said to me and another contestant that she knew who the Top 5 were. I said ‘who do you think they will be?’ She said that she didn’t ‘think’ she ‘knew’ because she saw the list that morning. She relayed whose names were on the list. Then we agreed to wait and see if that was indeed the Top 5 called that night. After it was indeed the Top 5 I knew the show must be rigged. Keep reading »

Chloe Sevigny: I got reamed out by The Advocate the other day for saying “tranny.” I guess I referred to [my character] as a “tranny” a couple of times and apparently, that’s a no-no in the community. I felt really bad! Nobody had ever told me. Did you know that?

Chloe Sevigny: Oh, so there’s been some uproar. Reee-donkulous. You can’t say anything anymore.

– Chloe Sevigny is the latest celeb to get spanked (not in a good way) by the Political Correctness Police. Chloe will be playing an Irish transgender assassin in a new miniseries and referred to her character as a “tranny.” However, “tranny” is not a word that the transgender community would like to be known by — although lots of otherwise queer-rights supporting folks, like, Chloe, didn’t get the memo. In fact, I didn’t get the memo until recently, either. You live, you learn.

So, I wish that once Chloe learned that the word she used is not preferred, her attitude had been more gracious and respectful. One hundred years ago, she might have been called a “broad” or a “dame” and some dude might be calling her annoyed response “reee-donkulous”! [Huffington Post]

Jenna Talackova is a 23-year-old, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Miss Canada pageant queen, who’s probably not much different than her fellow pageant competitors — except that that she was born a boy. Talackova says she knew she was in the wrong body by the time she was 4, and began living as a girl (and undergoing hormone therapy) at the age of 14. By 19, she had gender reassignment surgery, and was making the rounds on the pageant circuit. In 2010 she was a finalist in Thailand’s Miss International Queen, a pageant specifically for transsexuals. 

But Talackova wanted more — and so she applied to and competed in the Miss Universe Canada competition. Keep reading »

When pop culture depicts transgender people, they usually do it in such a facepalm way that I wonder why anyone bothers anymore. The latest what-were-you-thinking? comes courtesy of Libra tampons in New Zealand, which aired a commercial that implies trans folks who dress as women are not “real women.” The commercial shows an ostensibly “real” woman standing next to a trans person in the bathroom, who I guess is a drag queen. They both put on their lip gloss and mascara and adjust their boobs in their tight party dress. Then the “real” woman pulls a tampon out of her purse. The drag queen makes a “hmmph!” face and walks away. Keep reading »

Sofia Vergara Thinks She Looks Transsexual

“I did a movie called ‘Grilled’ with Ray Romano and Kevin James that went straight to video. I played a transsexual, a guy who had gone all the way with the operation to become a woman. I had a great time playing that character. I look like a transsexual anyway. I’m a woman, but I’m super-exaggerated with my boobs, my ass, my makeup, and my accent. When I get ready for an event, I always look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘I look like a transvestite!’ I love it.”

—Sofia Vergara of “Modern Family” talks to The Advocate about playing a transsexual in the 2006 movie “Grilled.” In the interview, the reporter points out that Sofia has acted opposite Neil Patrick Harris (in “The Smurfs”), Sean Hayes (in “The Three Stooges”) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (in “Modern Family”), who happen to be three of the most well-known openly gay actors out there. Is This Spoof Always Ad With Drag Queens Transphobic — Or Revolutionary?

Men aren’t usually in commercials for period products. But this spoof ad — which Proctor & Gamble denied via Twitter is affiliated with Always — has lots of them. Men in bright red lipstick, men in bustiers, men with beehive hairdos that would put Amy Winehouse to shame. The spoof stars drag queens and lots of ‘em; each one is boo-hooing like a three-year-old girl because he’s got man parts down south. “There are some people who would just love to have a period,” the subtitling reads. “Let alone a happy one.” I, a person not usually known for her love of advertisements, think the commercial is actually pretty revolutionary. I mean, drag queens? In a commercial? And it’s not the Super Bowl and they’re not being mocked?
