It’s getting to that point in the summer where it’s almost too hot to not go to the movies. But unfortunately, all this week’s movies suck. Just kidding! Seeing if you’re paying attention. It’s been a pretty intense week, with all the basketball and soccer madness causing men to screech and riot in the streets. I have trouble maintaining that kind of enthusiasm for longer than the time it takes to eat an eight-course meal, but can respect those who can bring it. I can also get enthusiastic for this week’s movie releases, as there are some good ones, like “Cyrus,” “Toy Story 3,” “The Killer Inside Me,” “I Am Love,” “Let It Rain,” and “Stonewall Uprising.” So, if you need an escape—and God knows you do—go see a movie already. Trailer Park: “The A-Team,” “The Karate Kid,” “Winter’s Bone,” “Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work”
If you have men (or soccer enthusiast women) in your life, chances are you’re going to want to escape from the constant World Cup noise. There’s no better escape from the heat, yelling, and ball-pinging than an air-conditioned movie theater. But for some reason, instead of releasing a bunch of chick flicks to compensate, half of this weekend’s movie releases are also packed full of machismo. Fortunately, Sundance winner “Winter’s Bone” is on limited release and looks pretty fantastic. Plus, there’s a Joan Rivers documentary that I had no idea existed until now but am weirdly glad that it does. “The A-Team” and “The Karate Kid” both look decent if you’re in one of those set-stuff-on-fire and beat-people-up kind of moods. It’s barely summer, but it’s already getting to the point where people are sweating the second they step outside. And for me, inside, since I refuse to blight my window with an air conditioning unit. It’s this time of the year that I remember why movie theaters are so great—air conditioning! Thankfully, there are some interesting movies coming out this week, including the hilarious “Get Him to the Greek,” terrifying “Splice,” romantic funny “Killers,” or just plain silly “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead.” Now go get some air! I know you’ve got a lot on your plate these days, but there are some serious movies coming out this week and you need a vacation from your life! You’ve been hearing about “Sex and the City 2” for months and months now and regardless of my feelings, a good number of women and gay men are making the pilgrimage to their local movie theaters to see it. But there’s also “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” the gory “George A. We’re exactly one month away from the first day of summer and if you, like I, haven’t realized this, we might have a lot of spring cleaning, spring flinging, and summer preparing to do. I guess that means you’re supposed to organize your closet, make out with a dude and paint your toenails? And because you/we have so much on our plate, it’s important to not waste valuable energy on socializing and partying until the wee hours of the morning and this is why you should go see a movie instead. There’s no reason to plead with you to see a movie this week because for once, there is a whole lot of awesomeness, coming to a theater near you. If you’re not planning on seeing “Iron Man 2,” you are going to feel super left out at the water cooler on Monday. It’s simply un-American to not see it. You like America, right? Also, drink Coca-Cola. Even if you’re not feeling the iron, there are two mommy-centric movies, “Mother and Child” and “Babies,” which are sure to shake up some ovaries. And then there are two, truly awesome-looking indie flicks, “Please Give” and “The Good Heart.” There really is something for everyone, so go get your movie on. Keep reading »

Sure it’s springtime, love is in the air and the birds are singing. But do you know what else is in the air? Pollen. And the bees are singing too … kinda. You might fall in love frolicking in the park, but you might also fall in love in a dark movie theater, sitting next to a handsome stranger who offers you his popcorn. If you’re going to take that route, this week’s movie releases are going to offer some really interesting post-movie conversation. To scare the crap out of yourself, go see “Nightmare on Elm Street,” or (shudder) “The Human Centipede (First Sequence).” If you’re carting kids or like watching animals be devious, catch “Furry Vengeance.” If you want to see Michael Caine kick some butt, there’s “Harry Brown,” and if you want to feast your eyes on Ryan Reynolds playing Jeff Daniels’ imaginary superhero, watch “Paper Man.” Keep reading »
Trailer Park: “The Back-up Plan,” “The Losers,” “Oceans”
Every year, I miss Earth Day. I mean, I do my part to only bring re-usable bags to the grocery store and have a water canteen thingy, but I feel like I should be picking up trash at the beach or composting or something. But if you’re like me and didn’t do anything, you get an extra chance this weekend because if you go see Disney Nature’s “Oceans,” they’ll donate money to save the world’s coral reefs. I don’t know if “The Back-up Plan” is saving babies or donating sperm or anything, but if you hate the earth and love romantic comedies, you might as well see that.
