Jordan Matter’s Topless Photographs Liberate The Female Subjects

Photographer Jordan Matter’s new coffee table book, Uncovered: Women In Word and Image, was just released, and it features more than 80 New York women baring their breasts in public (legal in NYC). The project came about after “Nipplegate” — when Janet Jackson “exposed” her nipple on the Super Bowl halftime show — and, “I got to thinking about our culture of covering up.” In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Matter says, “The book became less political and much more about the empowerment that the women would feel. The photo subjects found the option of not covering up to be incredibly liberating.” Matter chose a wide variety of different women with different body types and breast sizes for the project, which makes the images especially compelling. Maine’s Topless Coffee Shop Burns Down

I’m one of those people that loves being naked. Ask anyone who has ever lived with me and they will tell you it’s my forte. Sadly, yesterday a coffee shop in Maine that shared my love of nakedness burned down. The Grand View Topless Café had been a huge success in Vassalboro, Maine since it opened February, due in large part to the half-naked wait staff. Relax, the servers were both male and female—the Grand View wasn’t just some pseudo Hooters. “We didn’t hire 10s,” the owner told CNN. “We hired everyone from skinny to big-boned.” Although many people in this small town were up in arms over the nudity when the place opened, the sex was selling. But, alas, the shop is no more. And the owner didn’t have insurance on the property. [Maine Today]

While the Grand View Topless Café rests in peace, let’s take a look at some other places where the topless business model prevails: Keep reading »

Sunbathe Topless Without Burning Your Nipples

While Europeans are known for spending the summer lazing about the beach topless, we Americans have more modest sunbathing practices, which involve covering up our boobs and bums. But if you’re taking vacation in France this summer, you’ll be able to test the topless waters without showing your peaks to the entire Riviera. Starting in June, Sephora France will stock 50 of its stores with Nippies, those little stickers cute shapes like stars and hearts that cover up your nipples and are normally worn under clothing that don’t allow for a bra to prevent “wardrobe malfunctions.” While Nippes are for sale in the states, Bristols 6, the company behind Nippies, is marketing their use in France as a way to avoid unintended nipple slips at the pool when wearing teeny bikinis, and on their own as an alternative to tops (yes, the adhesive is waterproof). “While topless sunbathing is de riguer in Europe, Nippies are a chic cover-up for less courageous Americans desiring a cool Euro vibe. … Undercover or exposed, Nippies are a patch of freedom you won’t need to hide,” reads a promotional email. Would you wear these sparkly stickers in place of your swimsuit top? [Bristols 6] Keep reading »
