Does Tommy Hilfiger’s Comeback Mark The Return Of Americana Fashions?

Maybe it’s just my generation, but I don’t ever remember a time when Tommy Hilfiger was considered cool. I was aware that in the not-too distant past, TH designs were pretty classy, but by the time I was style-aware, the brand had already become cheapened into patriotic logo fashions. Basically, no one was going around bragging about their hot Hilfiger handbag. As the designer says himself, “The large logos and the big red, white and blue theme became ubiquitous … It got to the point where the urban kids didn’t want to wear it and the preppy kids didn’t want to wear it.” In fact, I even remember a scene from the MTV reality series “Rich Girls” in which 16-year-old Ali Hilfiger is recruited by her dad to come in and review his collection. It was both no surprise and heartbreaking as she went through every piece, not really liking anything, and suggesting massive changes as a team of pissed-off designers and her obviously disappointed dad looked on. Not that Ali has turned out to be some huge style icon, but Tommy probably could have benefited from an overhaul along the lines of her suggestions back then. Keep reading »

Keith Haring Foundation Kicks It With Tommy Hilfiger

Looks like the iconic urban street artist Keith Haring is experiencing a bit of a rad revival. Although Haring died of AIDS in 1990, his foundation lives on and has been bringing his works to life in new forms, first with SIGG water bottles and now with shoes, thanks to Tommy Hilfiger. Available at Colette, Hilfiger uses Haring’s exuberant designs to decorate women’s, men’s, and kids’ sneakers, as well as rain boots. Although these styles are pretty specific to a certain fashion taste, we’re loving this collaboration for bringing together two different facets of Americana—Hilfiger’s traditionalism and Haring’s urban punch. How Many Pairs Of Jeans Do You Own?

Breaking news: Tommy Hilfiger is giving his two cents about the amount of jeans a woman needs. “Women only need one pair of jeans — but they must fit,” he told Breaking News. “There are pairs of jeans that are worth spending a lot of money on. Depends on the material. You wear jeans more often than an evening dress or a leather jacket.” Truuuue …

Personally, I have at least four pairs, and I’m not a jeans person at all. I’ll wear jeans maybe three times a month because I live in leggings, dresses, and skirts. But, despite that, I still have a variety of denim, because certain jeans just don’t fit with every occasion. I need my regular skinny jeans for day to day, my dressed-up skinny jeans for evening affairs, a loose pair for relaxed Sunday brunch, and my distressed worn-out pair for when I really feel like being a bum. Sorry, Tommy, one pair just won’t do for me, no matter how nice they may be. Then again, what a brilliant exercise in minimalism. How many pairs of jeans do you have? Could you survive with just one?
