A Handy Guide To What These Various Old Conservative White Politicians Have Said About Rape

I don’t know about you, but I have such a hard time remembering which conservative politician said what ridiculously offensive thing about rape. They’re all old and white and most of them are in some state of partial baldness. They all look the same! And they all sound basically the same too, given that woman-hating bile spews from their open pie holes. Alas, they are all individual people, who hold or have held positions of power within government, and aspire to inflict their beliefs upon your life, so it behoves us to be able to keep them straight. Know thine enemies! Above, a quick overview of the most noteworthy five: Richard Mourdock (running for U.S. Senate in Indiana, current state treasurer), Iowa Congressman Steve King, Missouri Representative Todd Akin, Tom Smith (running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania), and and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Ladies Be Talkin' About Shoes

Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Tom Smith, the Senate candidate from Pennsylvania who last week compared pregnancy from rape to having a baby out of wedlock, has verbal diarrhea again. Last week, Smith introduced vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan at a campaign event in PA and was filmed working the crowd. As you can see in this video of his greatest sexist hits (it’s the second item), Smith walked up to Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones two women and asks them, “What are we talking about here? Two girls together talking!” One of the women answers, “We’re talking about the power of petite women.” And then Smith replies, “My guess would have been you were talking about shoes.” You know ladies: always talking about shoes! I guess we should be grateful he didn’t say “nail polish,” though, right? Lifetime Movies For Republicans Who Don’t Understand Rape

Republicans are airing sexual ignorances this week. Representative Steve King of Iowa has “never heard of” statutory rape causing pregnancy; Senate nominee Tom Smith thinks ”having a baby out of wedlock” is “similar to” rape;  and, of course, there’s Todd Akin. Have these guys never watched “Law & Order: SVU” or browsed movie listings on Lifetime? Rape narratives are a primetime TV staple these days, rivaled in volume only by Real Housewives and Ryan Seacrest’s face.

To speed the sexual education of the GOP, we have paired ten Republicans’ ill-conceived rape comments with cinematic antidotes from the Lifetime TV oeuvre. Movie night at the Tampa Hilton, anyone? Read more…

  • Alright, Republicans, you can go home now. Tom Smith of Pennsylvania wins for the most absurdly offensive thing that could be said about rape and ladies who be havin’ promiscuous sex. The Tea Party-endorsed Smith, who is challenging Democratic Senator Bob Casey, actually compared rape to having a child out of wedlockin some misguided attempt to appear empathetic. He was asked by an Associated Press reporter, “How would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter who, God forbid, would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will? Do you have a way to explain that?” And the conversation went on as follows:

Tom Smith: I lived something similar to that with my own family. She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to.. she chose they way I thought. No don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t rape.

    AP: Similar how?

Smith: Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.

    AP:  That’s similar to rape?

Smith: No, no, no, but … put yourself in a father’s situation, yes. It is similar. But, back to the original, I’m pro-life, period.

So, basically, getting pregnant from consensual sex on our wedlock is as bad as rape ... for their fathers. Of course. Who will think of the dads when a woman is raped?! Not only is this gravely offensive to rape victims, but it’s the very definition of the word paternalism. [Think Progress]
