Sweet Release: What’s In And Out The Week of May 20th 2008

  • Scarlett Johansson is the latest starlet to put a record out. But unlike the over produced bubble gum pop of her predecessors, Anywhere I Lay My Head is a tender collection of Tom Waits covers. You know the girl’s got it going on when David Sitek from TV On the Radio produces it, Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs plays guitar, and David Bowie sings back-up vocals. Her deep voice is perfect match for the thoughtful tracks and she even wrote one original, “Song for Jo”. While you probably weren’t impressed by her “Brass In Pocket” Pretenders’ cover in Lost in Translation, this disc will definitely live up to her hype. [Amazon.com]

    Scarlett Johansson Churns Out Her First Single

    Catherine and I disagree on very few things — the musical talent of The Counting Crows, meat, this song, and perhaps the notion of Scarlett Johansson fancying herself a popstar all together. This is the video for the first single off Scarlett’s upcoming album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, in which most of the songs are Tom Waits covers.     ScarJo Set To Become A Singing Sensation

    In the grand tradition of Lindsay Lohan and Brittany Murphy, actress Scarlett Johansson has turned recording star. It may be shocking after her mediocre, albeit cute, karaoke version of Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” in Lost in Translation, but ScarJo has been signed to a record deal. Slated for release in the May 20 by the recently revived Atco Records, her debut album was produced by Brooklyn indie rock idol, David Sitek from TV on the Radio and will feature cameos from the likes of goth guitar god Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The record entitled Anywhere I Can Lay My Head, will have one original song and 10 covers of Tom Waits tracks. This is good news for Scarlett’s fans and for Tom Waits fans like us — we love his moody love songs — but even better news for Waits who will finally be able to wank to his own music.
