Guess Who Was Once Arrested For Blocking An Abortion Clinic Entrance?

Today's Lady News photo
  • This guessing game isn’t too hard: GOP pain-in-the-neck Rep. Todd Akin, of course. Akin has admitted he was once arrested for blocking an abortion clinic entrance. Aw, come on, guys! He just wanted to first make sure those women were “legitimately raped”! [Feminist.org]

Idea: anytime a religious conservative Republican wants to use the word “rape” in public, he or she should run it through a publicist first. The wife of Rep. Todd Akin, the politician who last month questioned whether rape is “legitimate rape” and claimed women’s bodies reject sperm during a sexual assault to keep them from getting pregnant, has added her voice to the WTF-Are-You-Thinking chorus. Birth control, as imagined by crazy people!

This parody video brilliantly eviscerates Todd Akin, Paul Ryan, and their 171 fellow politicians who sought to redefine the legal definition of rape and mocks Akin’s assertion that women can’t get pregnant from “legitimate rape.” Be warned, there is simulated violence, sexual and otherwise. Lifetime Movies For Republicans Who Don’t Understand Rape

Republicans are airing sexual ignorances this week. Representative Steve King of Iowa has “never heard of” statutory rape causing pregnancy; Senate nominee Tom Smith thinks ”having a baby out of wedlock” is “similar to” rape;  and, of course, there’s Todd Akin. Have these guys never watched “Law & Order: SVU” or browsed movie listings on Lifetime? Rape narratives are a primetime TV staple these days, rivaled in volume only by Real Housewives and Ryan Seacrest’s face.

To speed the sexual education of the GOP, we have paired ten Republicans’ ill-conceived rape comments with cinematic antidotes from the Lifetime TV oeuvre. Movie night at the Tampa Hilton, anyone? Read more…

Today in our regularly scheduled segment “Old White Male Politicians Revealing Themselves To Be Ignorant About Reproductive Rights”: Rep. Steve King (R-IA), when asked about a minor being impregnated from statutory rape or incest, told a reporter:

“Well, I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way and I’d be open to discussion about the matter.”

One, what is there to “discuss” when an 11-year-old is impregnated by her grandpa? And two, this  is where I remind you that Rep. King, along with Rep. Akin and Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, all co-sponsored a bill to rewrite the existing federal ban on abortion funding to have an exemption only for cases of “forcible rape” or in the case of minors, “an act of incest.” Keep reading »

Kirk + Todd = Friends Forever

I am not even the teensiest bit surprised that Kirk Cameron, star of “Growing Pains” and well-known anti-choice/anti-gay marriage crusader, came to the defense of Rep. Todd Akin when he appeared on “The Today Show” this morning. They share the same values. Bros before hos who get raped and pregnant, right? Anyway, I am, however, intrigued that while Cameron noted Akin had apologized for “misspeaking” and lauded him for being a family man with six kids (emphasizing how many kids is odd to me — do children act as vouchers in heaven or something?), he never actually took a stance against anything Akin had said. Honestly, I think Kirk Cameron might still believe in the APRMT (Anti-Pregnancy Rape Mechanism Thingamajig), you guys. Eek.

Todd Akin Asks For Forgiveness

Well, I guess I can finally put away my hand mirror. My wrist was starting cramp up and I think I threw out my back. See, I’ve spent the last 36 or so hours looking for my APRMT — that stands for Anti-Pregnancy Rape Mechanism Thingmajig — which Rep. Todd Akin said kicks in when a woman is “legitimately” raped in order to prevent pregnancy. But I guess, 36 hours later, he’s finally admitting rape can result for pregnancy and the APRMT doesn’t exist? Well, what took him so long? I mean, I know yesterday he clarified that he thinks rape is terrible. (How kind of him.) But it wasn’t until the message above, in which he asks for forgiveness, that he actually admits that the information he presented as FACT — that doctors had told him “the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down” — is actually not true. Thanks for getting around to it, Rep. Akin. I know you’re busy! Keep reading »

  • Just a friendly reminder that in 2007, Mitt Romney said he would be “delighted” to sign a bill banning all abortions nationwide. His statement on Sunday night in response to the Akin incident said he supports abortion in cases of rape and incest. Before that, he identified as pro-choice and attended a Planned Parenthood fundraiser. So, which is it? [BuzzFeed] Keep reading »
