Ashley Judd was compared to Todd Akin by conservative writer for The Daily Caller, Alex Pappas. Seriously?

Ashley Judd’s name has been floated around as possible Democratic candidate to run Senator Mitch McConnell in Kentucky in 2014. But haters have already come out swinging, with a writer for conservative blog The Daily Caller comparing the actress/humantarian/women’s rights activist to Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin. No, seriously. He did:

“Judd runs the risk of being portrayed as a Todd Akin-esque candidate — meaning voters simply decide she’s unqualified to serve as a senator, because her comments are so outrageous.”

They both have the initial “A” in their names and when people talk about them the word “senate” is thrown around, but that’s where the similarities end. Judd’s comments may be on the liberal end of the spectrum, but they are not “outrageous” in the way that Akin’s uneducated comments were. Last I checked, Ashley Judd understands actual biology. It’s been an abysmal few months for women, thanks to the many, many members of the Republican party insisting on allowing comments about rape to pour out of their faceholes. Every other day during election season, there’d be some guy from Missouri or Indiana or Pennsylvania (that’s Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, and Rick Santorum, to be clear) trying to explain why a woman who was physically and emotionally violated wasn’t as important as the unborn child she might be carrying. There was Iowa Representative Steve King, who said that he had never “personally” heard of a woman getting pregnant from rape or incest.  And Washington Representative Steve Koster, who famously said:

“Incest is so rare, I mean, it’s so rare…But the rape thing– you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept the child, gave it up for adoption, and she doesn’t regret it. On the rape thing, it’s like, how does putting more violence onto a woman’s body and taking the life of an innocent child that’s a consequence of this crime—how does that make it better? You know what I mean?”

It appears that yes, the Republican party has a rape problem, and can’t even follow Mitt Romney’s campaign directive: “If you’re about to talk about rape as anything other than a brutal and horrible crime, stop.” So, they’ve brought in an organization to give them rape sensitivity training! Who’d've thunk?! Suggesting that pregnancy from rape is “God’s will,” that some rape is “legitimate” while other rape is not, and saying a woman’s body has “a way of shutting the whole thing down” so pregnancy does not occur from rape DOES NOT MAKE WOMEN WANT TO VOTE FOR YOU. Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin may have found two women — including one who was raped and had an abortion — to appear in a campaign ad proclaiming him the second coming of Gloria Steinem, but the rest of us ladies were not buying it. Oh my God, you guys. I didn’t realize just how BIG us pro-choice feminists won last night’s election until compiling this list. It’s not just that we have more four years of President Obama — we also have our first openly gay person to serve in the Senate, the first Asian-American women in both the House and Senate, the first Hindu to serve in Congress, and several other “firsts” too numerous to list.

I could honestly not be prouder to be a progressive American than I am today. And yes, I’m including 2008 in that statement! After the jump, thanks to EMILY’S List, here is a list of all the pro-choice female politicians who won last night.

Todd Akin's New Ad

Three months ago, Missouri’s Senate candidate Todd Akin said that “pregnancy from rape is really rare” and “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut the whole thing down.” Instead of dropping out of the race for some desperately-needed basic biology lessons, the Republican candidate pressed on with his campaign. Yesterday, he released a campaign ad starring two women, one whom was born in Russia and extols the freedoms of America and another who says she was raped and had an abortion. Keep reading »

It seems like every day another Republican politician is bloviating about the definition of rape as if he, a middle-aged man, is the true authority on the subject. As Tina Fey said so perfectly in her speech at the Center for Reproductive Rights, “If I have to listen to one more grey-faced man with a $2 haircut explain to me what rape is, I’m going to lose my mind.” I mean, we currently live in a culture where a chart is required to keep track of which male politicians claim rape cannot cause pregnancy and which ones believe it is simply part of God’s comprehensive plan to inflict devastating sexual violence on women and populate the earth with the fruits of their rapists’ loins.

Instead of patiently explaining to these men why they have no reason, no right, and no qualifications to mansplain these serious issues to me, I’m going to take a page from their playbook and blindly, confidently, and erroneously explain a few things to them. Because obviously, as a 27-year-old woman, I am an expert on the following things… Keep reading »

Tina Fey was a keynote speaker at the inaugural gala for the Center for Reproductive Rights, where she took on the squicky, cringe-worthy topic of “legitimate” rape. Because Tina Fey is hilarious and smart and amazing, she has the perfect analogy for Todd Akin’s rape-y words. [YouTube]

A Handy Guide To What These Various Old Conservative White Politicians Have Said About Rape

I don’t know about you, but I have such a hard time remembering which conservative politician said what ridiculously offensive thing about rape. They’re all old and white and most of them are in some state of partial baldness. They all look the same! And they all sound basically the same too, given that woman-hating bile spews from their open pie holes. Alas, they are all individual people, who hold or have held positions of power within government, and aspire to inflict their beliefs upon your life, so it behoves us to be able to keep them straight. Know thine enemies! Above, a quick overview of the most noteworthy five: Richard Mourdock (running for U.S. Senate in Indiana, current state treasurer), Iowa Congressman Steve King, Missouri Representative Todd Akin, Tom Smith (running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania), and and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Todd Akin In ’08: Docs Give Abortions To Women Who Aren’t Pregnant

Rep Todd Akin rape

It’s getting to be quite the week for years-old videos to come back and bite candidates, and the latest victim is one Todd Akin, the would-be junior Missouri senator of ”legitimate rape” fame. Seems Akin gave a speech in 2008, in which he compares abortion to slavery and calls abortion providers “terrorists.” He then goes on to describe the “bottom-of-the-food-chain … pit[s]” that they supposedly work in. “You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking,” he explains. “Not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die. All of these things are common practice, and all of that information is available for America.” Read more…

Todd Akin Makes Dumb Comments About Equal Pay: “It’s About Freedom”

Today's Lady News photo
  • Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican’s gift that keeps on giving, has now bungled comments about equal pay and why he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. (You can read my 2010 interview with Ledbetter here to learn more about it.) Akin was asked by an audience member — a man, actually! — at a town hall meeting, “You voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Why do you think it is okay for a woman to be paid less for doing the same work as a man?” His response didn’t actually answer the question (no surprise there) but at least he didn’t blame it on women this time:

“Well, first of all, the premise of your question is that I’m making that particular distinction. I believe in free enterprise. I don’t think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don’t pay. I think it’s about freedom. If someone wants to hire somebody and they agree on a salary, that’s fine, however it wants to work. So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble.”

You see, he wants the freedom to discriminate in pay if he thinks women deserve to be paid less than men. It’s not about sexism at all! It’s just about liberty. [Marie Claire]
