  • Angelina Jolie has written a piece for The Daily Beast about Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old girls’ education activist in Pakistan who was shot by the Taliban, and how she discussed it with her children. Angie actually makes a good case for using Malala’s story as a teachable moment to discuss with your kids what a privilege it is to have an education.  [The Daily Beast]

Study Finds No Link Between HPV Vaccine And Promiscuity In Girls

Today's Lady News photo
  • Pay attention, concern trolls: there is zero link between the HPV vaccine and increased promiscuity in vaccinated girls, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers have compared the sexual behavior of young women who were vaccinated against HPV at age 11 or 12 against girls who weren’t vaccinated and found no marked difference in behavior. Critics of HPV vaccinations for girls have long clutched their pearls that young women would behave more sex knowing that they were protected from strains of the cancer-causing virus. [Newser]

Argentina Allows Woman Trapped In Sex Slavery To Have Abortion

Today's Lady News photo
  • Argentina has allowed a woman who was forced into sex slavery to have an abortion. The 32-year-old woman had been kidnapped and forced into a prostitution ring, which got her impregnated. A judge had initially refused to allow her an abortion because he said there was no proof she had been raped. (In the predominantly Catholic country, abortion is illegal except in cases of rape or to save a woman’s life.) The abortion was finally done today after the ruling was overturned. [BBC]

Ireland’s First Abortion Provider Opens Next Week

Today's Lady News photo
  • A Marie Stopes International women’s reproductive health care clinic — sort of the Planned Parenthood across-the-pond — is opening next week in Belfast, Ireland. The clinic will be the first-ever in Ireland to provide abortions, which are illegal except to save the woman’s life or preserve her health.  [Feministing]

Elizabeth Banks feminist-show
  • Oh squee of squees! Elizabeth Banks from “Wet Hot American Summer” and “30 Rock” is producing a sitcom for CBS about “the culture clash as a feminist professor rooms with Playboy Bunnies and they all struggle for their own sort of empowerment.” I’m over Playboy Bunnies as a pop cultural discussion point for feminism. But whatever! I guess I’ll have to take my feminism on mainstream TV where I can get it.  [Perez Hilton]
  • The man who raped a 73-year-old woman in Central Park last month also sexually assaulted two other women on the day of the attack before he was arrested. He had also sexually assaulted two elderly women in the past. Hmm, here’s an idea: don’t let rapists out of jail.  [NYMag.com]

14-Year-Old Girls’ Rights Advocate In Pakistan Shot And Injured By Taliban

Today's Lady News photo
  • A 14-year-old girl who fought for education for girls in Pakistan was shot while walking home from school. She has written for the BBC about life under the Taliban as a girl and won the National Peace Award For Youth. The local Taliban has claimed responsibility for shooting Malala Yusafzai for being “a Western-minded girl” who “always speaks out against us.”  She is currently in critical condition at a hospital in Peshawar. Our thoughts are with her. [Al-Jazeera, BBC]
  • Frisky contributor Melissa Petro addresses the guidance counselor who was fired from her job because she had previously worked as a sexy model and asks whether racy previous careers make women unfit for working in education. It’s a subject Petro unfortunately knows much about: she resigned from her job as a New York City public school teacher after it was made public that she had once been a sex worker.
